Ideogram vs Midjourney (2026): letters or a directed still?

Ideogram wins type on the image. Plus is $20, or $15 billed annually. Midjourney wins a still that has to look directed. Standard is $30. They are not interchangeable, and Canva often holds the type either way.

Ideogram

7.8/10

Best for type-in-image

The rare generator that can spell the headline.

Ideogram survived the image-generator pile-up by winning a job the others still fail: letters that are letters. Thumbnails, event posters, packaging comps, a social frame where the headline is the image.

Best for
Marketers who need letters on the image — posters, thumbnails, packaging comps.
Skip if
The still has no type, or the job is a product cutout you already photographed.

Why it ranks

  • Text-in-image is actually the product, not a slide
  • Fast enough for thumbnail and poster comps you will recut
  • Cheaper than adding a designer for every 'put the words on it' brief

Watch-outs

  • Taste ceiling is lower than Midjourney when there is no type to save
  • Long copy and tiny legal lines still break
  • Easy to ship a poster that looks like an AI poster

02

Best for distinctive stills

The still that looks directed — if you can wait on Discord and a prompt.

Midjourney is still the image generator other tools get compared to when the job is a still that has to look like someone chose it. Campaign moodboards, concept art, a hero that is not a stock-library cousin. It is not a catalog tool, and it is not a typesetter. Midjourney alternatives is the decision page if you are trying not to buy it — or to keep it on purpose.

Best for
Art directors and marketers who need a distinctive hero still, not a catalog cutout.
Skip if
You needed readable type, a product photo from a phone, or a commercially indemnified Creative Cloud workflow.

Why it ranks

  • Still the most distinctive look in the category when the prompt is specific
  • Mood, lighting, and 'this could be a campaign' energy ChatGPT Images rarely hits
  • A real community of people who iterate instead of publishing the first four-grid

Watch-outs

  • Discord-native habits are still the product, even with a web app
  • Type, logos, and product accuracy are not why you are here
  • Commercial terms are a conversation with legal, not a slogan on the pricing page

Both products make a still from a prompt. That is the overlap ads keep selling. A headline that has to render inside the frame, and a hero that has to look directed, are different briefs. Mixing them up is how a media buyer buys Midjourney Standard because a moodboard was beautiful and then sets the offer in Photoshop anyway — or buys Ideogram Plus and wonders why the still looks like a poster.

This page is the two-way, winner by job. Ideogram prices are the ones we cite from ideogram.ai/pricing, checked 19 September 2026. Midjourney prices are the Comparing Plans ladder from the same day: Basic $10, Standard $30, Pro $60, Mega $120. Is Ideogram worth it and is Midjourney worth it are the subscriptions. Midjourney vs Leonardo is the hero-versus-batch fight. Midjourney vs DALL·E is the Plus-tab fight. The image ranking scores Midjourney at 8.3 and Ideogram at 7.8. We will not invent a spelling accuracy percentage or a partner URL. We did not re-fetch either cart on 23 September.

The public bills, in one place

Ideogram: Plus is $20 a month or $15 billed annually ($180 a year). Pro is $60 a month or $42 billed annually ($504 a year). Team is $30 a user a month or $20 billed annually, with a two-user minimum, on the card we cite. Free is a queue and a watermarked taste. Priority credits on the subscription expire; the $4 top-ups we saw roll over. API is a different bill. Confirm checkout. Tax was extra on the page we opened.

Midjourney: there is no useful free plan. Basic is $10 a month for about 3.3 Fast hours and no Relax. Standard is $30 for 15 Fast hours and unlimited Relax. Pro is $60, with Stealth. Mega is $120. Annual billing is about 20% off on the ladder we cite in Midjourney pricing. Basic is a weekend. Standard is the plan most operators keep if the still is a weekly habit and public Relax is acceptable.

Buy Ideogram if the letters are the creative

Ideogram earns the seat when a thumbnail, a stat card, or a product name has to be in the picture, not in a text box you add later. Plus at $20, or $15 billed annually, is the honest personal row. Pro is the credit climb, not a taste upgrade you owe yourself. Is Ideogram worth it is the subscription. Skip Ideogram if the brief is 'make it look expensive' and the headline will be set in Canva. You will pay for a spelling specialty you then cover up. Skip it if you needed a batch with a trained look — Leonardo, on Midjourney vs Leonardo. Skip it if the asset is a SKU on a clean background.

  • Best for: type that is part of the image
  • Skip if: you will typeset anyway, or the still is the whole ad
  • Honest watch-out: a correct word on a generic poster is still a generic poster. Read it before you spend

Buy Midjourney if the still has to look directed

Midjourney earns the hero when taste is the product: a campaign frame, a world, a texture you will recut. Standard at $30 is the weekly seat on the ladder we cite. Pro at $60 is Stealth and the commercial clause, not a sharper adjective. Basic at $10 tells you whether you like the look. It is not a campaign plan. Is Midjourney worth it is the subscription. Midjourney pricing is the hour math. Skip Midjourney if the only reason you opened it was the words. You will iterate Fast hours and then typeset in Canva, which you could have done on the first frame from a cheaper tab. ChatGPT Images, inside Plus at $20, remains the draft still if you do not need this look. Midjourney vs DALL·E is that two-way.

The 30-day tell

After a month, either an Ideogram frame shipped with the offer readable at phone size, or you retyped it. Either a Midjourney still survived an art director, or it stayed in Discord. If you are typesetting every 'text' image, you bought the wrong specialty. The paid-social ranking is the desk if these stills are ads. The image ranking is the wider table.

Ideogram wins the letters. Midjourney wins the directed still. Canva wins the type you insist on setting yourself. A single 'best AI image tool' sentence is how both invoices happen.Aiacent, 2026

Verdict

Ideogram if the type is the job. Midjourney if the still is the job. Canva if you will lay the type out. Firefly if the file already lives in Adobe. Then read is Ideogram worth it or is Midjourney worth it for the subscription you actually meant, and Midjourney alternatives if a third still tool is already in the meeting.
