Perplexity

Answers with sources — a research tab, not a copy desk.

8.0/10Best research ChatGPT alternativeUpdated September 19, 2026

The Aiacent take

Perplexity is the ChatGPT alternative for research, and it is a bad substitute for everything else. You open it when you need a sourced brief, a competitor snapshot, or a first pass on a question you would otherwise dump into ten tabs.

You do not open it to write the homepage. Jasper and ChatGPT still win that job. You do not open it to draft the first outbound touch. Copy.ai still wins that job. Mixing them up is how 'ChatGPT alternatives' lists waste a morning.

Pro is the same $20 as Plus. If your week is half research and half drafts, many operators keep both. That is allowed.

Pros

  • Citations are the product, not a toggle
  • Faster than ChatGPT when the job is 'what is true on the public web'
  • Collections beat a pile of untitled chats for a research thread

Cons

  • A weak writer if the output has to sound like your brand
  • Sources can be thin or circular — you still read them
  • Not a campaign system, a sequencer, or an enterprise knowledge graph

Who it's for

  • Strategists, SEOs, and founders who brief themselves from the public web
  • Editors who want sources next to the claim
  • Anyone whose ChatGPT habit is 'search, but in a chat'

Who should skip it

  • Brand teams that needed a copy desk (Jasper)
  • RevOps that needed account research inside a workflow (Copy.ai or Clay)
  • People who will not click the citations

What matters in the product

Cited answers

The whole point. Read the links. Perplexity can still be confidently wrong with a footnote.

Collections and threads

Keep a research topic together. Not a CMS. Not a brief tool like Surfer.

Verdict

The research alternative. Buy Pro if ChatGPT's browsing tab is how you waste an hour. Do not buy it because you needed a writer.
