The default brain. Still the right first writing seat for most people.

ChatGPT is the baseline every other AI writing tool has to beat. For a solo operator with a decent brief, Plus is still the correct first purchase in 2026: drafts, rewrites, outlines, and the ugly first pass on a landing page.
It loses the moment several people have to sound like the same company. There is no Jasper-style voice card the intern cannot ignore. Custom GPTs and projects help; they are not a content-ops system.
We rank it second on the writing list on purpose. It is the tool we would start with. It is not the tool we would standardize a brand team on.
Most 'we need an AI writer' tickets are a ChatGPT Plus ticket with extra procurement.
Pros
- The best generalist writer most operators will actually open
- Research, drafting, and editing in one thread beats a template farm
- Plus is cheap enough that 'should we buy a copy tool' is a real question

- No shared brand voice unless you build the habit yourself
- Easy to publish confident filler if nobody owns the facts
- Not a campaign system, a sequencer, or a style-guide desk

- Founders and operators who write their own campaigns
- Editors who need a thinking partner, not a template picker
- Anyone testing whether they even have a writing-tool problem
Who should skip it
- Marketing orgs that already fight voice drift across a bench
- RevOps teams whose pain is research-to-first-touch (Copy.ai)
- Companies that need audit trails and brand locks (Writer)
What matters in the product
Generalist drafting
Ads, emails, outlines, and 'make this less stiff.' Quality tracks the brief. Garbage briefs scale now, which is worse.
Projects and custom GPTs
Close enough to a voice file for one person. Not close enough for a five-person content team.
Research in the same tab
This is why it beats a 2021 copy generator. Verify claims anyway — especially product and legal ones.
Verdict
Start here. Stay here if you are one person with a good brief. Graduate to Jasper, Copy.ai, or Writer when the bottleneck is a team, a workflow, or governance — not access to a model.
