For a solo operator with a decent brief, Plus is still the correct first purchase in 2026: drafts, rewrites, outlines, and the ugly first pass on a landing page. People search 'AI stack for teachers' after a vendor demoed an operating system that writes the lesson, grades the essay, builds the quiz, and posts the newsletter. The honest 2026 stack is smaller: a brain you already open, a lesson you can defend Tuesday, then one seat per bottleneck you can name. If you cannot name the bottleneck, you are not shopping for a stack. You are shopping for a slide that will not survive Sunday night.

Facts from the period you already have to teach, ChatGPT Plus, and the standard you still own. Most 'we need an AI teacher stack' tickets are this ticket with extra procurement. A lesson outline, a differentiation pass, an exit ticket you will rewrite. Plus is $20 — OpenAI's public Plus seat, checked on the same 19 September 2026 pass as ChatGPT Plus vs Team. Custom GPTs are close enough to a voice file for one teacher. They are not a gradebook, a district LMS, or a tutor that replaces the hour.
Stay here until a named leak shows up on a school night: the student essay is fluent and hollow, the slides are a wall of bullets, or the handout still looks like 2014 clip art. Add Gamma when the deck for the period is the leak
The leak is a wall of bullets you will project in fifty minutes. Outline or notes in, a shareable deck out, then recut. Do not project the first generation at a parent night. Free is 400 starter credits that do not refresh. Skip Gamma if the file has to be born on last year's PowerPoint or Slides master — Plus AI, then the presentations ranking. Add Canva when the handout is the click
The leak is a worksheet, poster, or classroom tile that still looks like a Google Doc. Canva Free is a real canvas. Pro is the one-person Magic Studio seat — third-party recaps of the live US sticker put it around $18 a month or about $180 a year; confirm canva.com/pricing, checked 19 September 2026. The page itself moves and runs regional / promo numbers. Magic Studio is not a separate SKU. Canva for Education is a separate eligibility path — we will not invent a classroom sticker. Skip Canva if the leak was the lesson (ChatGPT) or the narrative deck (Gamma). Skip it if you needed a product photo. The design ranking is the longer canvas table.
Stay on free seats until the leak is paid
ChatGPT Free is a real taste. Grammarly Free is a real checker. Gamma Free is a real short deck. Canva Free is a real handout canvas. The free-tools ranking is the scored version of 'start here without a card.' Leave free the week a lesson has to publish, writing feedback has to live in the student box, a deck has to lose the badge, or a handout has to look like this year's classroom. Do not leave free because a vendor demoed an OS. Do not leave free because a faculty Slack said 'AI school.'
What is not a rung
- A 40-logo 'AI for teachers' OS that writes the lesson, grades the essay, builds the quiz, and emails families so you do not have to look.
- MagicSchool, Khanmigo, or another teacher wrapper as the default. Fine if the faculty already lives there. Not a reason to skip ChatGPT, and not a fourth scored model. The education ranking already leaves them as honorable mentions.
- An autograder as the grade of record. A model can draft a rubric and a first pass of comments. Hollow, fluent work still fools it. You still read the paper.
- A 'detect AI writing' toolbar as a stack seat. That is a policy conversation, not a ranking row.
- A second writer because ChatGPT felt cheap. Name the job first. The writing ranking is that page. The wrappers skip-list is the other.
- A district LMS because it added an AI button. Buy the LMS if the LMS is the leak. Do not buy it as a lesson desk.
- Perplexity, Midjourney, or a chatbot widget as a classroom default. Research, images, and support are different stacks. The research ranking and the chatbot ranking are those pages.

A solo teacher vs a department, in one pass
Solo teacher: ChatGPT Plus, Grammarly Free or Pro if students already write in a box, Gamma if this week's deck is the hour, Canva if the handout is the click. Stop. Do not buy a wrapper OS until a faculty already lives there. Do not buy Plus AI until the file has to stay on a school master. Do not buy Jasper until a department voice is the leak — and even then, the writing ranking is the RFP, not a classroom suite. A department or 6–12 person academic team: keep Plus for teachers who write alone, add Grammarly Pro when the overlay is a shared habit (Pro replaced the old Business SKU and allows up to 149 seats — Grammarly pricing), add Gamma Plus or Pro when several people share branded decks (Gamma subscriptions are per user; two people on Plus is two seats), add Canva Business when several people ship tiles (Teams is closed to new sign-ups; new buyers are on Business — confirm canva.com/pricing). That is a stack. A slide with twelve 'AI for education' logos is a directory. The teachers ranking is the RFP if you want the four scores in one table. The presentations ranking is the RFP if the next buy is the deck. The writing ranking is the RFP if the next buy is the sentence. The free-tools ranking is the RFP if the next seat still has to be $0.
Verdict
Do not start from a list of logos. Start from the lesson and ChatGPT. Add Grammarly when student writing in the box is the leak — Grammarly pricing if the fight is the seat. Add Gamma when the deck is the hour, and recut it. Add Canva when the handout is the click. Then read the teachers / education ranking if you want the four scores in one table, the presentations ranking if the other desk is decks, the writing ranking if the next buy is the sentence, and the free-tools ranking if you are still proving the habit without a card.
