Cursor is the coding tool we would start a greenfield team on in 2026. Forked from VS Code, it stopped pretending the AI is a plugin: Tab, Agent, Cloud Agents, and a repo the model can actually see. The teams that like it treat Cursor like a junior pair who lives in the branch. The teams that hate it installed it on Friday and wanted Copilot's autocomplete on Monday without changing a muscle.

The teams that hate it wanted Tab in VS Code and got a CLI.

Devin Desktop

Windsurf's successor — an IDE with an agent command center, not a new autocomplete.
Windsurf is now Devin Desktop. Cognition kept the IDE, put an Agent Command Center on it, and pointed the marketing at fleets of local and cloud agents. If you still have Windsurf installed, the upgrade is an over-the-air rename. Your plan, extensions, and settings are supposed to come along. That is the honest 2026 product name — not a scavenger-hunt URL still titled Codeium.

- You needed tab-complete in VS Code, or you are still searching 'Windsurf' for the 2024 Codeium editor.

- JetBrains plugin still exists if IntelliJ was the reason you stayed

- The name changed under people. 'Windsurf vs Cursor' lists that ignore Devin are stale
- As a default individual editor, Cursor still has the sharper habit
- Devin Cloud is a different spend than a $20 IDE seat — do not conflate them
ChatGPT

The default brain. Still the right first writing seat for most people.
ChatGPT is the baseline every other AI writing tool has to beat. For a solo operator with a decent brief, Plus is still the correct first purchase in 2026: drafts, rewrites, outlines, and the ugly first pass on a landing page. Image generation in the same tab is a different review — ChatGPT Images on the 2026 image ranking. Claude vs ChatGPT is the two-way fight if the other tab in the meeting is Anthropic. ChatGPT vs Gemini is the two-way if the other tab is Google. Perplexity vs ChatGPT is the two-way if the other tab is a research engine. On a coding desk it is a helper tab, not an IDE — that ranking is AI coding. On an SEO desk it is a draft helper, not a content-score platform — that ranking is AI SEO.

- The best generalist writer most operators will actually open
- Research, drafting, and editing in one thread beats a template farm
- Plus is cheap enough that 'should we buy a copy tool' is a real question
Watch-outs
- No shared brand voice unless you build the habit yourself
- Easy to publish confident filler if nobody owns the facts
- Not a campaign system, a sequencer, or a style-guide desk
People search 'GitHub Copilot alternatives' for three reasons, and only one of them is 'Copilot is bad.' The other two: the IDE was never the fight — they needed an agent workspace — or someone said Copilot and meant Word. If you do not name which of those is true, you will buy Cursor and still want Tab in JetBrains, or ChatGPT because Plus is $20 and then paste for a year.
This is a decision page, not a dump list. The four products below are real alternatives for a named job. The AI coding ranking is the scored table. Microsoft 365 Copilot is not on this list — that is Word, Outlook, and Teams on the productivity ranking. Read this one if you are trying to not buy GitHub Copilot — or to keep it on purpose.
When GitHub Copilot still wins
Stay on GitHub Copilot — or buy it — when the leak is completions in the editor you will not leave. VS Code, JetBrains, neovim, a PR on github.com. Pro is $10. Business is the path legal will sign. Completions stay unlimited on paid plans. Chat and agents draw 2026 AI Credits — read the allowance before you promise the team 'ten dollars, unlimited everything.'
As an agent workspace, Cursor still feels like the product was built around the model. That is not an insult. It is the skip-if. If security already standardized on Copilot Business and will not reopen the IDE argument, this page should not talk you into a second editor. If you meant Microsoft Copilot in Word, leave — you are on the wrong brand.

The decision, in order
1. You will live in the agent
Cursor. This is the alternative most 'Copilot feels bolted on' tickets should have bought. Tab, Agent, Cloud Agents, a repo the model can see. Pro is $20 — same band as Plus, for a job Plus cannot sit in. Review every diff. Daily agent users should read the current usage pools; $20 is not unlimited Claude Max. Skip it if the IDE was not the fight — you should have stayed on Copilot.
2. The repo is a pile, and you trust Anthropic
Claude Code. Terminal-first, IDE-friendly, a different product from the claude.ai writing tab. You keep your editor. That is the point versus Cursor. It rides Claude Pro, Max, Team, or a Console seat. You are not saving money versus Cursor Pro. You are buying temperament and a surface. Skip it if the leak is autocomplete. Skip it if you wanted the whole editor to be the product.
3. Your bookmark still says Windsurf
Devin Desktop. Cognition renamed Windsurf, kept the IDE, and put an Agent Command Center on it. The upgrade is over-the-air. Do not re-buy Cursor because a 2025 blog said Windsurf died. Do not buy Devin Cloud — the long-running VM agent — because you liked Cascade. Choosing from zero? Start on Cursor, not here.
4. You only needed a snippet
ChatGPT. Helper tab. Paste a function, argue with a stack trace, go back to the editor you already have. The 8.3 is the writing-seat score. As a coding environment it is not one. If the paste-back-into-VS-Code loop is how you waste an hour, you wanted Copilot or Cursor — not a different chat tab. Claude if the file is long; that is Claude vs ChatGPT, not this page.
What is not an alternative
- Microsoft 365 Copilot — Word, Outlook, Teams. Different product. Productivity ranking.
- Claude.ai and Gemini — generalists. Claude Code is the coding seat.
- Aider, Cline, Continue, Amazon Q — real peers if you already have a setup. Not a fifth scored default.

Verdict
Do not start from a list of logos. Start from the leak. Completions in the IDE you will not leave → GitHub Copilot still wins. You will live in the agent → Cursor. The repo is a pile and you want Anthropic → Claude Code. You were on Windsurf → Devin Desktop. You only needed a snippet → ChatGPT, then stop pretending that is a coding stack.
