Anthropic's coding agent — the repo in the terminal, not another chat tab.
The Aiacent take
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent: terminal-first, IDE-friendly, and a different product from the Claude chat tab we already review for writing. You point it at a repo. It reads, plans, edits, and runs commands. The teams that like it treat it like a careful staff engineer who will say the approach is wrong. The teams that hate it wanted Tab in VS Code and got a CLI.
We ranked it third because the job is real and distinct. Cursor is the workspace. Copilot is the in-editor default. Claude Code is the agent you bring to the repo you already have. ChatGPT is still a snippet tab. Mixing Claude Code with 'we use Claude for docs' is how you buy Max and still paste functions out of claude.ai.
Access rides Claude Pro, Max, Team, or a Console seat. You are not saving money versus Cursor Pro. You are buying temperament and a surface. Skip it if the leak is autocomplete.
Claude Code is what we open when the refactor is a pile. Cursor is what we open when the whole day is the agent. Copilot is what we leave on when we are just typing.
Pros
- The careful Anthropic temperament, pointed at a working tree
- Sits in the terminal and in the IDE you already have — you do not have to switch editors
- Strong on long, messy refactors if you will read the plan
Cons
- Not an editor. Completions and a VS Code keymap are still Copilot or Cursor
- Easy to confuse with claude.ai — that is the writing tab on the writing ranking
- Usage on Pro can feel tight if you treat it like an unsupervised intern overnight
Who it's for
- Engineers who already live in a terminal and a messy monorepo
- People who wanted Claude's pushback on a refactor, not a yes-machine snippet
- Teams that will not switch off JetBrains or VS Code but still want an agent
Who should skip it
- Buyers who needed completions in the current IDE (Copilot)
- Buyers who wanted the whole editor to be the agent (Cursor)
- Writers who meant claude.ai — that is Claude on the writing ranking
What matters in the product
Repo-native agent
The product. Files, tests, a plan you should still read. Not a chat window with a file picker bolted on.
Terminal and IDE
You keep your editor. That is the point versus Cursor. If you wanted a new IDE, you are on the wrong row.
Same Claude, different seat
Pro unlocks it. It is not a free extra personality on the writing tab. Budget agent usage separately from 'I asked Claude to outline a blog post.'
Verdict
The terminal agent. Buy it when the repo is the job and you trust Anthropic's temperament. Do not buy it as Cursor, as Copilot, or as the Claude writing tab.
