GitHub Copilot is still the coding assistant most teams already half-own. Completions and next-edit in VS Code, JetBrains, and neovim. Chat and agents in the editor and on github.com. This is not Microsoft 365 Copilot. Word, Outlook, and Teams are a different review on the productivity ranking. Mixing the two brands is how a CIO buys the wrong seat and an engineer still pastes from ChatGPT.
Pro is $10 — cheaper than Cursor Pro or Claude. Completions stay unlimited on paid plans. Chat and agent usage now draw GitHub AI Credits. Read the current allowance before you promise the team 'it's ten dollars, unlimited everything.'
Most 'we need Cursor' tickets from a Copilot shop are an Agent ticket. Most 'we need Copilot' tickets from a Word shop are a Microsoft 365 ticket.
Pros
- Lives in the editor and the GitHub PR you already open
- Cheapest serious coding seat if completions are the leak
- Business and Enterprise are the path legal will actually sign
Cons
- As an agent workspace, Cursor still feels like the product was built around the model
- 2026 usage credits mean chat and agents are not a flat 'unlimited' story
- Easy to confuse with Microsoft 365 Copilot — different product, different meeting
Who it's for
- Engineering orgs standardized on VS Code or JetBrains
- Companies that needed policy and a GitHub-native PR loop
- Individuals who wanted completions without switching editors
Who should skip it
- People shopping an AI-native workspace (Cursor)
- People who live in a terminal agent (Claude Code)
- Anyone who meant Microsoft 365 Copilot in Word
What matters in the product
Completions where you type
The original product, still the reason most seats exist. Unlimited on paid. This is the job Copilot still wins.
Chat and agents
Real in 2026. Also where the credit meter lives. Daily agent users should compare Cursor before they assume $10 is the cheaper Agent.
GitHub-native review
PRs, Copilot on github.com, org policy. Why enterprises keep it even when individuals prefer Cursor at home.
Verdict
The default if the IDE was not the fight. Buy Pro or Business for completions and a GitHub-native loop. Graduate to Cursor when the agent is the workflow. Do not buy it because someone said 'Copilot' and meant Word.
