Cursor is the coding tool we would start a greenfield team on in 2026. Forked from VS Code, it stopped pretending the AI is a plugin: Tab, Agent, Cloud Agents, and a repo the model can actually see. The teams that like it treat Cursor like a junior pair who lives in the branch. The teams that hate it installed it on Friday and wanted Copilot's autocomplete on Monday without changing a muscle.

GitHub Copilot is still the coding assistant most teams already half-own. Completions and next-edit in VS Code, JetBrains, and neovim. Chat and agents in the editor and on github.com. ChatGPT is the baseline every other AI writing tool has to beat. For a solo operator with a decent brief, Plus is still the correct first purchase in 2026: drafts, rewrites, outlines, and the ugly first pass on a landing page. Image generation in the same tab is a different review — ChatGPT Images on the 2026 image ranking. Claude vs ChatGPT is the two-way fight if the other tab in the meeting is Anthropic. ChatGPT vs Gemini is the two-way if the other tab is Google. Perplexity vs ChatGPT is the two-way if the other tab is a research engine. On a coding desk it is a helper tab, not an IDE — that ranking is AI coding. On an SEO desk it is a draft helper, not a content-score platform — that ranking is AI SEO.

People search 'AI stack for engineers' after a vendor demoed an operating system that writes the PR, hosts the preview, completes the line, files the ticket, and watches production while you sleep. The honest 2026 stack is smaller: the change you will still review, then one seat per bottleneck you can name across editor, completions, and a host. If you cannot name the bottleneck, you are not shopping for a stack. You are shopping for a slide that will not survive Tuesday's CI.

Start here
The work. Most 'we need an AI engineering stack' tickets are a review-the-diff ticket with extra procurement. The bug, the failing test, the PR someone else has to read. Write those down. Date them. Staff the change that is allowed to be wrong. Then decide whether the next leak is an editor the model can sit in, Tab in the IDE you will not leave, or a URL a non-local teammate can click.
ChatGPT Free is a real taste. Plus is $20 and will read a pasted stack trace. It is not an editor. It is not Tab. It is not a host. Stay on the paste until a named leak shows up in a week you will actually ship: you are rewriting whole files in a browser tab, you will not leave JetBrains, or a founder needed a preview URL before anyone cloned the repo. If none of those are true, another logo will not make Tuesday's PR better. Unreviewed Agent folklore is the failure mode. Read the diff.

Pro+ is $60 when you can show the included pool dying — is Cursor worth it. Teams is $40 a user when SSO is named, not when Pro felt lonely. The coding ranking is the scored workspace. Skip Cursor if you will not leave VS Code or JetBrains. That is Copilot. Skip it if the deliverable is a URL and nobody asked for a local toolchain. That is Lovable or Replit.
Skip Cursor if Cascade is already the weekday muscle. Windsurf vs Cursor is that keymap. Skip it if security already standardized on Copilot Business and nobody will switch surfaces. A second $20 seat will not invent a review culture.
Add GitHub Copilot when Tab is the leak — and you will not leave the IDE
The leak is completions in the editor you already open. Copilot Pro is $10. Business is $19 a seat. Cursor vs Copilot is the two-way. Is GitHub Copilot worth it is the subscription. Skip Copilot if Agent-in-the-repo is already the job and you will move. Skip it if you only paste stack traces. Plus is enough. Skip it if you buy Copilot and Cursor in the same week 'to be safe.' Pick the surface.
Do not add Codeium, Tabnine, and Copilot in the same sprint. Pick the completion you will keep. The coding ranking already declined a plugin trophy.
Add Lovable or Replit when the deliverable is a URL
The leak is a clickable web app a teammate can open without cloning. Lovable Pro starts at $25 for 100 credits — Lovable vs Cursor. Replit Core is $20 if the team already lives in a browser IDE — Replit vs Cursor. v0 if Vercel-plus-GitHub is already the muscle; confirm v0.app/pricing. Skip all three if the repo already exists and the next change is a PR. A host will not become your editor.
Do not add Lovable, Replit, and v0 together. Pick the host you will stay in through publish. Git sync exists so you can leave. Leaving into Cursor is a real second rung when the prototype became the product. Buying the host because the editor felt incomplete is how unused credits fund a directory.
Add Claude Code when the leak is a terminal agent on a messy repo
The leak is a careful agent, and you will keep your current IDE. Claude Code is that seat on this site. ChatGPT vs Claude for coding is the tab two-way. Skip Claude Code if you already live in Cursor Agent and the complaint is the model, not the surface. Skip it if you needed Tab. A terminal temperament will not complete the line in JetBrains.
Stay on free seats until the leak is paid
ChatGPT Free is a real paste. Cursor Hobby is a real editor taste. Copilot Free is limited completions. Lovable Free is 5 daily build credits, 30 a month. The free-tools ranking is the scored version of 'start here without a card.' Leave free the week a multi-file change has to ship on a cadence, Tab has to sit in the IDE you will not leave, or a preview URL has to exist before anyone clones. Do not leave free because a vendor demoed a fleet.
What is not a rung
- A 'coding OS' that promises to write the spec, the PR, and the postmortem. That is a directory.
- The product-manager stack on day one if you do not already write specs. That ladder starts from a brief. Use it when PM is the job.
- Windsurf and Cursor together because a list said 'AI editors.' Pick the keymap. Windsurf vs Cursor.
- Devin / cloud-agent theater as the only seat. Cloud agents are a Cursor Pro feature and a usage conversation, not a reason to skip reading the PR.
- Four host logos at once. Lovable, Replit, v0, and a mystery 'AI software engineer.' Pick the URL surface that already pays, then come back.
- Jasper or Writer.com because an engineer writes docs. Those are writing / governance desks. The writing ranking.
- Vendor 'AI employee' theater that merges itself. The agents ranking already declined that row.
