Microsoft Copilot

The assistant that sits in Word, Outlook, and Teams — if you already pay for Microsoft 365.

7.7/10Best Microsoft 365 alternativeUpdated September 19, 2026

The Aiacent take

Microsoft Copilot is a ChatGPT alternative only when Microsoft is already the operating system. The product that matters is the one inside Word, Outlook, and Teams — not the public copilot.microsoft.com tab, which is a fine chat window and a weak reason to switch.

IT and legal will prefer it to shadow-IT ChatGPT. Writers will not. If the leak is brand voice, you still need Jasper. If the leak is cited research, you still need Perplexity. If the leak is a first outbound email, you still need Copy.ai or a human.

We put it on the alternatives page so a Microsoft shop does not get pitched six 'AI writers' before someone mentions the seat they already half-own.

Pros

  • Drafts where the email and the deck already live
  • Enterprise controls that a consumer ChatGPT tab will not give legal
  • Good enough meeting recap when Otter or Gong is the wrong shape of spend

Cons

  • As a naked chatbot, ChatGPT and Claude still write better prose
  • The $30-class add-on is easy to buy for a company that will not change a habit
  • Not Jasper, not Copy.ai, not Perplexity

Who it's for

  • Microsoft 365 organizations that will actually click Copilot in Outlook
  • Companies that lost the ChatGPT argument with security and still have to draft
  • Ops teams that wanted meeting notes without a second recorder

Who should skip it

  • Google Workspace shops (that is Gemini)
  • Marketing teams that needed a voice card (Jasper)
  • Anyone buying a chatbot on a $20 personal card (ChatGPT or Claude)

What matters in the product

In-app drafts

The only Copilot that earns a ranking mention. A rewrite in the Word doc beats a prettier paragraph in another tab.

Tenant controls

Why enterprises buy it. Grounding on your files is the pitch; garbage SharePoint is still garbage.

Verdict

The Microsoft-stack alternative. Buy the 365 add-on when the work is already in those apps. Do not buy it as a ChatGPT killer, and do not buy it as a marketing platform.
