Windsurf's successor — an IDE with an agent command center, not a new autocomplete.
The Aiacent take
Windsurf is now Devin Desktop. Cognition kept the IDE, put an Agent Command Center on it, and pointed the marketing at fleets of local and cloud agents. If you still have Windsurf installed, the upgrade is an over-the-air rename. Your plan, extensions, and settings are supposed to come along. That is the honest 2026 product name — not a scavenger-hunt URL still titled Codeium.
We ranked it fourth because the job is real (a desktop for many agents) and because people still search Windsurf. Cursor remains the individual AI-native default. Copilot remains the in-editor default. Claude Code remains the terminal agent. Devin Desktop is the Windsurf shop's next seat, and a peer if you wanted a Kanban of agents more than a new keymap.
Devin Cloud — the long-running autonomous agent on its own machine — is a different buying meeting. Do not buy Cloud because you liked Cascade in 2025. Do not skip Desktop because a blog still says Windsurf died.
If your bookmark still says Windsurf, you are already on this product. If you are choosing from zero, you are probably on the Cursor row.
Pros
- Honest about the Windsurf rebrand — same IDE bones, agent command center on top
- Local plus cloud agents in one Kanban is a real 2026 job
- JetBrains plugin still exists if IntelliJ was the reason you stayed
Cons
- The name changed under people. 'Windsurf vs Cursor' lists that ignore Devin are stale
- As a default individual editor, Cursor still has the sharper habit
- Devin Cloud is a different spend than a $20 IDE seat — do not conflate them
Who it's for
- Existing Windsurf users who need the current name and the current download
- Teams managing several local and cloud agents from one desktop
- JetBrains shops that wanted the Windsurf/Cascade plugin, not a VS Code fork
Who should skip it
- Individuals choosing a first AI editor from zero (start with Cursor)
- People who needed completions only (Copilot)
- Buyers who meant Devin Cloud, the autonomous teammate, and not the IDE
What matters in the product
Agent Command Center
The 2026 reason it is not just a VS Code fork. Spaces, a Kanban, local and cloud agents. Useful if you will actually run more than one.
Windsurf compatibility
The practical reason it is on this list. Same bones. New name. Do not re-buy a second editor because a landing page said Windsurf is gone.
Devin Cloud, separately
Long-running agent on a VM. A different price and a different trust decision. Rank the desktop here; shop Cloud as a teammate, not as Tab.
Verdict
The Windsurf successor. Stay if you were already in that editor or you wanted a desktop for many agents. Start on Cursor if you are choosing from zero. Do not shop a 2024 Codeium URL.
