Stack guide · 2026
A sane AI stack for consultants (2026): a ladder, not a 40-tool advisory OS
Start with the memo you will still rewrite. Add Claude when the dump is the brief. Add Gamma when the file is a deck. Add Grammarly when the box the client sees is the leak. Skip the agency OS and the coach suite until a step is named.

- How we rank
ChatGPT
8.3/10Best default writing seat
The default brain. Still the right first writing seat for most people.
ChatGPT is the baseline every other AI writing tool has to beat. For a solo operator with a decent brief, Plus is still the correct first purchase in 2026: drafts, rewrites, outlines, and the ugly first pass on a landing page. Image generation in the same tab is a different review — ChatGPT Images on the 2026 image ranking. Claude vs ChatGPT is the two-way fight if the other tab in the meeting is Anthropic. ChatGPT vs Gemini is the two-way if the other tab is Google. Perplexity vs ChatGPT is the two-way if the other tab is a research engine. On a coding desk it is a helper tab, not an IDE — that ranking is AI coding. On an SEO desk it is a draft helper, not a content-score platform — that ranking is AI SEO.
- Best for
- Anyone who needs a strong general writer, researcher, and editor in one tab.
- Skip if
- Several people have to sound like the same company every week — that is Jasper's job.
Why it ranks
- The best generalist writer most operators will actually open
- Research, drafting, and editing in one thread beats a template farm
- Plus is cheap enough that 'should we buy a copy tool' is a real question
Watch-outs
- No shared brand voice unless you build the habit yourself
- Easy to publish confident filler if nobody owns the facts
- Not a campaign system, a sequencer, or a style-guide desk

Claude
8.2/10Best careful ChatGPT alternative
The careful generalist — long drafts, messy docs, and fewer confident inventions.
Claude is the ChatGPT alternative we would actually switch to for writing, not the one we would buy to save money. Same $20 band. Different temperament: longer context, fewer swaggering citations, better at 'read this pile and do not hallucinate the brief.' Claude vs ChatGPT is the head-to-head by writing, coding, research, and long docs. Perplexity vs ChatGPT is the research-tab fight — Claude is the pile you already have, Perplexity is the public web.
- Best for
- Operators who write from long sources and want a model that will push back.
- Skip if
- You needed the cheapest Plus-shaped seat with plugins, or a shared brand desk.
Why it ranks
- Still the generalist we trust most on long, messy source material
- Pushes back instead of cheerfully inventing a citation
- Artifacts and projects are close enough to a writing room for one person
Watch-outs
- No shared brand-voice system — that is still Jasper
- Plugin and browsing culture is thinner than ChatGPT's
- Easy to treat a careful draft as a finished one

Gamma
8.4/10Best AI presentation maker
Prompt, outline, or doc in — a shareable deck out, without opening PowerPoint first.
Gamma is the AI presentation tool we would open first in 2026. Prompt, paste an outline, or upload a doc. Get a card-style deck you can present in the browser or export. The teams that like it treat Gamma like a junior designer with a stopwatch. The teams that hate it pasted a 60-page PDF and presented the first pass to a board.
- Best for
- Operators who need a credible first deck from a brief and will edit before they present.
- Skip if
- The file has to be native PPTX on a brand master, or Tome nostalgia is the brief.
Why it ranks
- Fastest path from a messy brief to a deck someone will click
- Export to PPT, PDF, and Slides is real — Tome's old lock-in is not the model
- Good enough for internal reviews, fundraising drafts, and lunch-and-learns
Watch-outs
- On-brand enterprise masters still look more native in Beautiful.ai or Plus AI
- Credit math can surprise a team that treats every outline like a free generate
- A pretty first draft is not a story — someone still has to cut slides

Grammarly
8.2/10Best everywhere writing layer
The writing layer that follows you into every text box.
Grammarly won by living in the text box. The AI era just gave it more to do: rewrites, tone, and drafts. We rank it as the writing layer for people who will not open a dedicated copy tool. Grammarly alternatives is the decision page if you are trying not to buy it — or to keep it on purpose.
- Best for
- Anyone who writes in public — support, sales, docs, and execs included.
- Skip if
- You only write in one app that already has a great model.
Why it ranks
- It is already in the browser when you need it
- Tone and clarity suggestions are still better than most built-in checkers
- Enterprise brand tones are underrated
Watch-outs
- Generative features are 'fine,' not a reason to dump Jasper
- Can nag
- Privacy-sensitive orgs need to read the enterprise docs, not the blog

People search 'AI stack for consultants' after a vendor demoed an operating system that writes the SOW, builds the deck, coaches the client, and invoices the retainer. The honest 2026 stack is smaller: the memo you will still sound like yourself in, then one seat per bottleneck you can name. If you cannot name the bottleneck, you are not shopping for a stack. You are shopping for a slide that will not survive the next steering committee.
This is a ladder, not a dump. The freelancer ranking is the scored solo desk — close if you are one person selling advice. The agencies ranking is the shop with a bench. The coaches ranking is courses and a community, not a billed workstream. The writing ranking is the copy desk if the leak grew a voice file. The presentations ranking is the longer deck table. Free AI tools is the card-was-the-objection version. Read this one if you sell advice, decks, and memos — and are trying not to buy five logos in one quarter.
Start here
The work. Most 'we need an AI consultant stack' tickets are a first-memo ticket with extra procurement. The diagnostic, the options memo, the ugly SOW, the email after the workshop. Write those down. Date them. Staff the sentence that is allowed to be wrong. Then decide whether the next leak is a pile you cannot paste into one tab, a deck the room has to click, or polish in the box the client already sees.
ChatGPT Free is a real taste. Plus is $20 and will draft the memo. It is not a 200-page-export temperament. It is not a deck. It is not an overlay in Gmail. Stay on the draft until a named leak shows up in a week you will actually invoice: the dump is the brief, the one-pager still looks like a Google Doc, or the portal is full of typos you would have caught in Word. If none of those are true, another logo will not make Tuesday a quieter inbox. The SOW is not an AI job. Scope it in the doc you already send.
- Start: a memo habit you would send to a client — then one named leak
- Do not start: a 40-tool advisory OS, an agency suite, or a coach platform because you bill hourly
- Honest watch-out: a prettier deck will not invent a point of view, and a stack will not invent a retainer
Add the next seat when the bottleneck is named
Add ChatGPT Plus when Free's cap is the wall — and the memo is already the job
The leak is a first pass you will still cut, and the tab is already ChatGPT. Plus is $20. Team is the shared-workspace conversation — ChatGPT Plus vs Team is that page, and most solo consultants are not a Team buyer. Custom GPTs are close enough to a voice file for one person. They are not a five-person agency desk.
Skip Plus if you already draft in Claude and the pile is long — Claude vs ChatGPT, and Claude vs ChatGPT for research if the dump is the brief. Skip it if several contractors have to sound like one firm — that is Jasper on the writing ranking, and the agencies ranking is the shop version. Skip it if the bottleneck is the deck. A second $20 tab will not layout a steering slide.
Add Claude when the client dump is the brief
The leak is an 80-page export, a transcript, a contract, a data room, and you wanted a model that will push back. Pro is the same $20 band as Plus. Claude vs ChatGPT for research is that page. Claude vs ChatGPT for business writing is the memo-temperament split. Do not add Claude because a tweet said it is smarter. Add it when the pile is the job. Two $20 tabs can coexist. Four $20 tabs plus Gamma plus Grammarly is how a consulting P&L funds unused logins.
Skip Claude if the work is a one-page options memo you already write in ChatGPT. Skip it if the corpus is papers — Elicit or Consensus, then the research ranking. Skip it if you will not open the source. A careful summary of a dump you did not read is a more expensive version of ten tabs.
Add Gamma when the file is a deck the room has to click
The leak is the workshop deck, the options slide, the readout — a file that is not a memo. Free is a real taste (starter credits; Gamma Help is explicit there is no traditional free trial). Plus is the honest making-decks seat — commonly about $9 a month on the public cards we have used elsewhere (confirm gamma.app/pricing). Pro is brand and export polish after someone will set a theme. Is Gamma worth it and Gamma pricing are those pages. Beautiful.ai vs Gamma is the two-way if the other leak is a locked kit.
Skip Gamma if the leak was the sentence. A better card will not write the diagnostic. Skip it if legal will only accept last year's PowerPoint master — that is Plus AI on the presentations ranking. Skip it if Canva is already the file OS. The presentations ranking is the longer table.
Add Grammarly when the leak is the box the client sees
The leak is typos and tone in Gmail, Docs, and the portal — not a blank page. Free if the job is mechanics. Pro on the web is $30 a month or $144 a year (~$12 averaged) — is Grammarly Premium worth it and Grammarly pricing are those pages. Grammarly vs ChatGPT is the two-way if someone tried to replace the overlay with Plus.
Skip Grammarly if you only write in ChatGPT and already edit there. Skip it if the memo is grammatically perfect and hollow. That is still you. LanguageTool if the overlay is the fight and the budget is a solo card. A green underline will not invent a recommendation.
Add Perplexity only when you are briefing yourself before the call
The leak is a cited first pass on the account, the niche, or three competitors — sources you will actually click. Pro is $20 a month or $200 a year. Many consultants keep Plus and Pro. That is allowed. ChatGPT vs Perplexity for research is the research-only split. Is Perplexity Pro worth it is the subscription decision. Skip it if you needed the memo — that is ChatGPT. Skip it if you will not open the link.
Add Jasper, Otter, or a suite only when that job is already the work
Jasper if several people have to sound like one firm — the agencies ranking and the writing ranking, not this ladder. Otter if the leak is the workshop you will not remember — Otter pricing. A freelancer stack if you are really one person selling mixed gigs. An agency stack if you have a bench. A coach stack if you sell a program, not a workstream. Skip them if you do not already have the channel.
What is not a rung
- An 'AI consulting OS' that promises to find clients, write the work, and invoice them. That is a directory.
- The agency stack on day one. Jasper, Buffer, and Zapier are a bench. The agencies ranking is that shop. You are not a shop until several people have to sound like one firm.
- The freelancer stack as a costume. Canva and Photoroom are file gigs. If the deliverable is a memo and a deck, start here, not there.
- The coaches ranking because you bill hourly. Courses and a community are a different job.
- Ahrefs or Semrush because a diagnostic mentioned SEO. Buy the index when SEO is the engagement — is Ahrefs worth it — not as a consulting starter kit.
- Midjourney because Gamma looked cheap. Midjourney is a directed still. The image ranking.
- Vendor 'AI employee' theater that files itself into the CRM. The agents ranking already declined that row.
Most 'we need an AI consultant stack' tickets are a ChatGPT ticket, a Claude ticket, or a Gamma ticket. The word stack is doing too much work.— Aiacent stack guide, 2026
A consulting desk, in one pass
Strategy / ops / independent advisor: ChatGPT Plus for the memo, Claude if the dump is the brief, Grammarly Free or Pro in the box the client sees. Stop. Do not buy Gamma unless a deck is the deliverable. Do not buy Jasper. Brand / transformation consultant who presents: Plus plus Gamma Free, then Plus on Gamma if Magic-class generation is weekly; Grammarly when the portal is the leak. Stop. Do not buy Beautiful.ai unless five people have to keep a kit. Research-heavy advisor: Plus plus Claude, Perplexity if you brief yourself before the call. That is a stack. A slide with twelve consulting-AI logos is a directory. The freelancer ranking is the scored solo table if you are one person. The agencies ranking is the RFP if the next buy is a bench. Writing is the RFP if the sentence grew a voice file. Presentations is the RFP if the canvas is the longer fight. Free AI tools is the RFP if the card is the objection.
Verdict
Do not start from a list of logos. Start from a memo someone will still rewrite. Add Plus when Free's cap is the wall. Add Claude when the pile is the brief. Add Gamma when the file is a deck. Add Grammarly when the box is the leak. Add Perplexity when the call is the leak. Then read the freelancer ranking if you want the solo scores, the agencies ranking if the leak grew a bench, the writing ranking if the sentence is the desk, the presentations ranking if the deck is the longer fight, and free AI tools if the next seat still has to be $0.
