Ahrefs vs Semrush (2026): the index vs the toolkit — which job?
Ahrefs wins the backlink and crawl graph. Semrush wins one login for rank, audit, and a first AI-visibility slice. They are not interchangeable, and the cheaper $129 Lite seat is usually the wrong reason to choose.

Ahrefs
8.4/10Best backlink and crawl suite
The crawl, backlink, and keyword suite — AI extras sit on top of the index.
Ahrefs is the SEO suite we would buy when the leak is data: who links, what ranks, what is broken, what the competitor actually has. Site Explorer, Keywords Explorer, Site Audit, Rank Tracker. The 2026 homepage will also sell AI visibility. That is a second product. Mixing them up is how you pay Lite for a content score you still do not have.
- Best for
- SEO leads who needed live backlink, keyword, and crawl data — not another content score.
- Skip if
- You needed a brief-to-score writer, or you thought Brand Radar was included in Lite.
Why it ranks
- The index other SEOs still argue from — backlinks, keywords, a crawler you can name
- Lite is a real paid desk; Standard drops the credit meter for daily research
- Brand Radar and custom prompts are sold as themselves, not buried as 'AI included'
Watch-outs
- Starter at $29 is not the Ahrefs people mean in a Slack argument
- Brand Radar starts at $199/mo per AI platform and is not in the base plan
- Not a Surfer brief, a Frase draft, or a reason to skip the content editor

Semrush
8.3/10Best SEO + marketing toolkit
SEO plus a marketing toolkit — AI visibility is now a plan row, not a plugin rumor.
Semrush is the suite we would buy when the same person has to check rankings, audit the site, peek at PPC, and show a client how ChatGPT talks about the brand. The 2026 packaging is SEO + AI Search on one subscription. Extra toolkits stack on. That is a real desk for an in-house marketer or a small agency. It is not a trophy versus Ahrefs.
- Best for
- Teams that needed one login for rank, audit, competitors, and a first AI-visibility slice.
- Skip if
- You only needed backlink depth, or you will ignore every toolkit except Keyword Overview.
Why it ranks
- One login that can do rank, audit, competitors, and a named AI-visibility quota
- Starter is the first row that looks like SEO + AI Search, not a leftover Pro rename
- Toolkits (Content, Social, Local, Traffic) are sold as add-ons — you can refuse them
Watch-outs
- The SEO plan is not the full AI-visibility product Semrush's own KB describes
- Ahrefs still wins when the argument is the backlink index, not the toolkit
- Content Toolkit is a writer add-on — not a reason to skip Surfer if the grade is the leak

Semrush

Both products will show you a keyword and a competitor. That is where the overlap ends, and it is why 'Ahrefs vs Semrush' is a bad 2026 question if you have not named the bottleneck. A specialist who lives in backlinks and crawls, and a marketer who needed rank, audit, PPC-adjacent research, and a ChatGPT-visibility report in one login, are different seats. Mixing them up is how you pay Semrush Starter for an index argument — or buy Ahrefs Lite because a blog said 'best SEO tool' and still needed a content toolkit.
This page is the two-way. Is Ahrefs worth it is the subscription. The SEO ranking is the content-side desk — Surfer, Clearscope, Frase — we left both of these suites off that scored table on purpose. Surfer alternatives is the leave-the-editor guide. A sane AI SEO stack is the ladder. Read this one if both logos are already in the deck.
The public bills, in one place
Ahrefs Starter is $29 a month. Lite is $129. Standard is $249. Advanced is $449. Enterprise starts at $1,499 on the pricing page we checked. Annual is advertised as up to 17% off. Brand Radar is a standalone from $199 per AI platform. Those rows were checked against ahrefs.com/pricing and Ahrefs' own 2026 plan guide on 19 September 2026 — the same ladder as is Ahrefs worth it.
Semrush Free is $0 — one demo project, 10 reports a day. SEO is $139 a month, or $117.33 billed annually. Starter (SEO + AI Search) is $199 / $165.17. Pro+ is $299 / $248.17. Advanced is $549 / $455.67. Extra users start at $45 a month. Base / Pro reports are $10 / $20 a month per report. Enterprise is a quote. Those rows were checked against semrush.com/pricing/seo-ai-search/ and Semrush's subscriptions KB on 19 September 2026. Annual is prepaid, advertised as up to 17% off. Confirm both carts — Semrush's pricing UI is regional and JS-rendered.
| If this is the SEO job | Buy | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Backlinks, referring domains, and a crawl graph you will argue from every week | Ahrefs (Lite if the desk is real; Standard if credits already died) | Semrush as a cheaper index |
| Rank, audit, competitors, and a first AI-visibility report in one login | Semrush (SEO if the AI slice is thin; Starter if prompt tracking is named) | Ahrefs Lite as a cheaper toolkit |
| A brief, a score, and a page that has to ship this week | Neither as the writer — Surfer. Is Surfer SEO worth it | Either suite as a content editor |
| Research-to-draft on a bill a two-person shop will keep | Neither — Frase. Is Frase worth it. Surfer alternatives if you are leaving a grader | Either $129–$199 row as a cheaper writer |
| How ChatGPT talks about the brand, and you do not need a crawler | Semrush Starter if the toolkit is already the week; Ahrefs Brand Radar standalone if the index is not the job | A second suite so the keynote felt complete |
| PPC, social, local, or a content generator on top of SEO | Semrush, then the named toolkit — Content / Social / Local / Advertising are add-ons | Ahrefs as a media-buy desk |
| A $20 outline and nobody will open a crawler twice a week | Neither paid row — ChatGPT Plus. The free-tools ranking if the card is $0 | Either logo as a chatbot |
Buy Ahrefs if the expensive part is the graph
Ahrefs earns the desk when the company already treats Site Explorer like evidence. Backlinks, content gap, a crawl of the site you own, keywords you will actually track. The model is not the product. The index is the product. That is why it scores 8.4 as the crawl and link suite. Worth Lite means $129 is cheaper than another quarter of guessing from a ChatGPT citation.
Starter is a look-up tab. Lite is the honest paid desk. Standard is the credit conversation. Skip Ahrefs if you do not open link reports. Skip it if the painful part is the draft — that is Surfer or Frase. Skip it if the same person has to do PPC and social before lunch. Is Ahrefs worth it is the subscription version of this paragraph.
- Best for: SEO specialists whose week is already the index
- Skip if: you needed a toolkit, a content score, or a $20 generalist
- Honest watch-out: Brand Radar is not in Lite. Buying Ahrefs 'for AI SEO' without naming the add-on is how this comparison wastes a quarter
Buy Semrush if the expensive part is one login that has to do three jobs
Semrush earns the 2026 seat when rank, audit, competitors, and a named AI-visibility quota have to live together. Starter is the first row Semrush's own KB describes as SEO + AI Search with 50 prompts a day. The cheaper SEO plan is five sites and 500 keywords with a thinner AI slice. That is why we score it 8.3 as the toolkit, not the deeper backlink graph.
Pro+ is more sites and history. Advanced is Share of Voice and API. Extra users start at $45. Content, Social, Local, and Traffic & Market are add-ons — buy the leak, do not buy the catalog. Skip Semrush if you will only open Keyword Overview and live in Ahrefs for everything else. Skip it if the leak is the brief. An Article Generator is not Surfer.
- Best for: in-house marketers and small agencies whose week is already a toolkit
- Skip if: you needed Ahrefs' index, a Surfer brief, or a second unused login
- Honest watch-out: Starter at $199 is not 'Ahrefs Lite plus AI.' It is a different shape of product
Neither logo if the leak is the page
Ahrefs will not write the article. Semrush's Content Toolkit will write something. Neither is the on-page habit we rank first. Surfer still wins brief → score → publish. Clearscope still wins the Docs grade. Frase still wins the cheaper end-to-end seat. The SEO ranking is that table. Surfer alternatives is the leave-or-stay guide. Buying both suites so a comparison blog felt complete, then still drafting in ChatGPT, is how a content program funds unused crawls.
What this comparison is not
- A database bake-off. We did not count referring domains on 400 hosts or invent a win rate.
- A 2022 'Pro vs Standard' rename. Semrush's 2026 rows are SEO / Starter / Pro+ / Advanced.
- A coupon hunt. No invented Impact, ShareASale, or via= IDs.
- A reason to skip the writer. The content-side ranking still starts at Surfer.
Most 'Ahrefs vs Semrush' tickets are an index ticket or a toolkit ticket. The word versus is doing too much work. The writer is usually a third logo.— Aiacent, 2026
Verdict
Ahrefs when the expensive part is the graph — Lite, then Standard if credits are the wall. Semrush when the expensive part is one login for rank, audit, and a first AI-visibility slice — SEO if that slice is thin, Starter if prompt tracking is named. Neither when the leak is the page (Surfer, Frase, Clearscope) or the outline (ChatGPT). Then read is Ahrefs worth it if only one suite is in the cart, the SEO ranking if you wanted the writer scores, Surfer alternatives if you are leaving a grader, and a sane AI SEO stack if you are trying not to buy the index and the editor on the same PO.
