Semrush

SEO plus a marketing toolkit — AI visibility is now a plan row, not a plugin rumor.

The Aiacent take

Semrush is the suite we would buy when the same person has to check rankings, audit the site, peek at PPC, and show a client how ChatGPT talks about the brand. The 2026 packaging is SEO + AI Search on one subscription. Extra toolkits stack on. That is a real desk for an in-house marketer or a small agency. It is not a trophy versus Ahrefs.

We score it 8.3 as the toolkit, next to Ahrefs at 8.4 for the crawl and link graph. Surfer still wins the on-page habit. Frase still wins the cheaper draft seat. Mixing those up is how you buy Starter to write blog posts and still have no brief.

Public list prices come from Semrush's SEO & AI Search pricing page and the subscriptions KB, checked 19 September 2026: SEO $139 a month ($117.33 billed annually), Starter $199 ($165.17), Pro+ $299 ($248.17), Advanced $549 ($455.67). Annual is prepaid, advertised as up to 17% off. Extra users start at $45 a month. Confirm the cart — regional pages move. We will not invent an Enterprise sticker or an Impact URL.

Pros

  • One login that can do rank, audit, competitors, and a named AI-visibility quota
  • Starter is the first row that looks like SEO + AI Search, not a leftover Pro rename
  • Toolkits (Content, Social, Local, Traffic) are sold as add-ons — you can refuse them

Cons

  • The SEO plan is not the full AI-visibility product Semrush's own KB describes
  • Ahrefs still wins when the argument is the backlink index, not the toolkit
  • Content Toolkit is a writer add-on — not a reason to skip Surfer if the grade is the leak

Who it's for

  • In-house marketers who needed rank, audit, and a first AI-visibility report in one login
  • Small agencies that will actually open Position Tracking every week
  • Teams that will name whether they needed Ahrefs' index or Semrush's toolkit before they buy both

Who should skip it

  • Specialists who live in backlinks and will ignore the rest of the toolkit (Ahrefs)
  • Writers who needed a content score (Surfer or Frase)
  • One person who wanted a $20 outline (ChatGPT Plus)

What matters in the product

SEO Toolkit

Keyword Overview, Position Tracking, Site Audit, competitors. The reason most seats exist. The SEO plan is five sites and 500 keywords a day.

AI Visibility Toolkit

Bundled on the 2026 plans, with a real quota starting on Starter (50 prompts/day on Semrush's own KB). The cheaper SEO row is a thinner slice. Read the plan, not the homepage.

Add-on toolkits

Content, Social, Local, Traffic & Market, Advertising, AI PR. Sold separately. Buy the leak. A Content Toolkit article is not a Surfer brief.

Verdict

Buy Semrush when the toolkit is the job. Buy Ahrefs when the index is the job. Do not buy either as a writer.
