Descript pricing (2026): Hobbyist, Creator, Business — and what the hours actually buy
Hobbyist is $16 a month billed annually. Creator is $24. Business is $50. The expensive mistake is paying for a show editor when you needed Otter — or staying on Free until the export is watermarked.

Descript is the editor we would hand a weekly podcast or a talking-head YouTube that is already recorded. You get a transcript. You delete the ramble. The timeline follows. Studio Sound cleans the room. Overdub patches a word if you trained the voice. That is a production job.

People search 'Descript pricing' because they hit the watermark, or because finance asked why a transcript editor costs more than a $20 chat tab. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed a cut, a meeting recap, or eight Shorts from a file you will not watch, you will buy Creator as a cheaper Otter and still have an uncut Zoom, or stay on Free until the export looks like a demo.

- Annual Hobbyist is the number most 'how much is Descript' pages quote. Monthly is $24. Do not plan the year on a homepage teaser you did not open.
- Media hours are imported or recorded media, whether you transcribe or not. AI credits are Underlord, Studio Sound, Green Screen, Eye Contact, generated media, avatars.
- Creator and Business list a seat ceiling (3 and 5). Each occupied seat is billed. 'Scale to a team' is not a free bench.
- Legacy and Sunset plans still exist for older accounts. If you subscribed before the media-hours / AI-credits shift, read Descript's legacy article — your allowance may not match this grid.
- We will not guess an Enterprise sticker. Anyone who publishes a mid-four-figure 'typical' contract invented it.
Stay on Free only to learn the transcript
Free is a real editor: text-based cut, a short recording, a watermarked 720p export, 100 one-time AI credits. It is how you find out whether you will sit with a transcript. It is not a show plan. If the wall is the watermark and you still want Descript, you are shopping Hobbyist. If the wall is 'we needed notes,' you are shopping Otter — Descript alternatives names that fork.
Buy Hobbyist if the show is occasional
Hobbyist is the honest light seat. Ten media hours, 400 AI credits, 1080p without a watermark, Studio Sound, filler removal, clips, a custom voice clone. One person. That is enough for a founder podcast that ships twice a month, or a talking-head YouTube that is not a daily upload.
Pay annually if you already cut in Descript and Free's watermark was the complaint. Pay monthly if you are proving the transcript habit is real. Skip Hobbyist if you ship weekly long-form — 10 hours goes faster than a blog admits. Skip it if nobody will read the transcript. A cheaper editor will not invent a show.

Buy Creator when the show is a weekly job
Creator is the seat most 'we make a show' tickets should have bought. Thirty media hours, 800 AI credits, 4K, stock library, top-ups, a second and third editor if you will actually pay for them. This is where Overdub, regenerate, and Underlord stop feeling like a tease.
Buy it when someone sits with the transcript every week. Do not buy it because Hobbyist felt lonely and a sales deck said 'scale.' If the leak is eight Shorts from a two-hour file you refuse to watch, Opus Clip is cheaper than a 4K seat. If the input is a URL, Pictory is the shop. If the file is a standup, Otter is the bot.

- Skip if: you have not used Hobbyist's transcript, or the leak is recap / Shorts / a blog
- Honest watch-out: extra seats are billed. Inviting a guest editor is an invoice, not a courtesy login.
Business and Enterprise are team conversations
Business is Brand Studio, 40 hours, 1,500 credits, translation and dub with proofread, avatars, priority support with an SLA. Buy it when several people cut on the same brand and someone has to own layouts. Do not buy it because Creator felt un-enterprise and the show is still one host in a closet.
Enterprise is SSO, SCIM, training opt-out, custom hours, a CSM. That is procurement. Descript says students, educators, and nonprofits can apply for a special rate — use their form. We will not invent a discount percentage.
Descript cost versus the seats people actually mean
Versus Otter (Pro about $17 a month, or about $8.33 billed annually): Otter wins live captions and a recap. Descript wins a cut. Buying Creator because the standup transcript felt 'more production' is how you pay for a timeline nobody opens. The transcription ranking is the meeting table.
Versus Opus Clip: Opus is the long-to-short machine. Descript will make clips. It will not replace a clipper you refuse to watch the source of. The YouTube ranking is that desk.
Versus Pictory: Pictory starts from a post or a script. Descript starts from tape. Mixing those up is how a transcript editor sits on an empty timeline. Pictory pricing is the plan page if that is the shop.
What we are not pricing
- A word-error-rate lab. We did not run 400-episode bake-offs or invent a review count.
- AI-credit overage as a published sticker. Top-ups exist on Creator and Business — read checkout.
- A fake Impact or PartnerStack URL. Until a real partner link is set, the CTA goes to descript.com.
- Rooms recording hours as if they were media hours. They are a different meter on the same grid.
