Make vs Zapier (2026): which automation wins which job?

Zapier wins the reliable zap. Make wins the visual machine. They are not interchangeable, and the cheaper 10,000-credit sticker is usually the wrong reason to choose.

Make

8.0/10

Best visual automation canvas

Visual scenarios for people who will actually build the machine.

Make (the product formerly sold as Integromat) is the visual automation canvas we would hand a technical operator. Scenarios, modules, routers. You can see the machine. Zapier's simpler zap is faster to first value. Make's scenario is faster to a branching workflow you will not outgrow in month two.

Best for
Ops engineers who need routers, iterators, and transforms — and will maintain the scenario.
Skip if
You needed a simple zap this week, a self-hosted box, or Clay for a list.

Why it ranks

  • Routers, iterators, and error handling that Zapier still makes you feel clever for needing
  • AI modules are steps on a canvas, not a separate 'agent product' you cannot see
  • Better cost control on heavy transforms if you design the scenario on purpose

Watch-outs

  • The canvas is a skill. A marketer who wanted three zaps will bounce
  • Not n8n — you do not own the runtime
  • Easy to build an unreadable spaghetti graph and call it 'AI ops'

Zapier

8.3/10

Best default automation platform

The default zap graph — with AI steps, not an autonomous coworker.

Zapier is still the automation tool we would start a non-technical team on in 2026. Triggers, actions, a catalog that already talks to the SaaS you pay for. The AI layer — Copilot, Agents, AI actions in a zap — is useful when the graph is already honest. It is not a reason to buy Zapier if you needed a chatbot.

Best for
Ops and GTM teams that need reliable app-to-app zaps and will treat AI as a step, not a strategy.

Why it ranks

  • The integration catalog most operators already half-own
  • AI steps, Agents, and Copilot sit on a graph people already understand
  • Easiest path from 'when this happens' to a working zap this week

Watch-outs

  • Task math surprises teams who treated every AI step as free thinking
  • Not Make — branching and transforms get expensive or clumsy at scale
  • Not an autonomous employee. Empty prompts still invent last quarter's SKU

Both products will move a form into Slack. That is where the overlap ends, and it is why 'Make vs Zapier' is a bad 2026 question if you have not named the graph. A two-step zap a marketer will actually publish, and a routed scenario with iterators someone will maintain, are different seats. Mixing them up is how you buy Make to save money on three linear zaps and bounce off the canvas — or stay on Zapier until a pile of overlapping zaps is the program.

This page is the two-way, winner by job. Zapier alternatives is the leave-Zapier guide — Make, n8n, Clay. The automation ranking is the scored table (Zapier 8.3, Make 8.0, n8n 7.9). Is Zapier worth it is the subscription decision. Read this one if the only argument in the room is the canvas.

The public bills, in one place

Zapier's self-serve grid is a plan plus a task tier. Free is $0 and 100 tasks a month, two-step zaps, one seat. Professional commonly starts at $19.99 a month billed annually for 750 tasks ($29.99 month-to-month). Team commonly starts at $69 a month billed annually for 2,000 tasks, with 25 users. Enterprise is a quote. Those rows were checked against Zapier's public pricing reference on 19 September 2026. Confirm zapier.com/pricing — task tiers move, and AI steps can cost more than one task.

Make still publishes Free / Core / Pro / Teams / Enterprise on make.com/pricing (checked the same day). Free is 1,000 credits a month, two active scenarios, a 15-minute interval. Paid rows are a credit slider: third-party 2026 recaps of the same public toggle commonly land Core around $9 a month billed yearly / about $10.59 monthly at 10,000 credits, Pro around $16 / $18.82, Teams around $29 / $34.12. We will not pretend a blog is the invoice. Confirm the live slider. Credits are the meter — most module actions are one credit; code time and some AI modules cost more. One August 2026 blog claimed the named tiers were gone. The vendor page we fetched still showed them. Believe checkout.

Buy Zapier if the expensive part is that nothing is wired

Zapier earns the default seat when the leak is a form, a ticket, a Slack ping, a row in a sheet — and someone will map the fields this week. The catalog is the product. AI steps, Copilot, and Agents sit on a graph people already understand. That is why it still leads the automation ranking. It is not a reason to buy Zapier if you needed a chatbot, and it is not a reason to leave if three linear zaps already work.

Professional is the honest individual plan. Free is a 100-task teaser with two-step zaps. Team is shared folders, 25 users, SSO — a different buying meeting. Agents are a second product (activities, not tasks; paid Agents commonly start around $33 a month billed annually on Zapier's own add-on tab). Skip Zapier if the scenario already has five routers. Skip it if the graph has to live next to the repo. Skip it if the row is an account. Those are Make, n8n, and Clay — Zapier alternatives names the forks.

  • Best for: ops, marketing, and support teams who will actually map the fields
  • Skip if: the zap became a machine, the graph has to be hosted, or the leak is a list
  • Honest watch-out: task math surprises teams who treated every AI step as free thinking

Buy Make if the zap became a machine

Make earns the visual seat when you need routers, iterators, error handling, and a canvas you can see. AI is a module on that canvas, not a separate agent SKU you cannot inspect. Zapier's simpler zap is faster to first value. Make's scenario is faster to a branching workflow you will not outgrow in month two. That is the whole product story, and it is why Make sits second on the automation ranking on purpose.

Core is the honest builder plan if you will live in the canvas: unlimited active scenarios, one-minute schedules, the API. Pro adds priority execution, custom variables, full-text log search. Teams adds roles and shared templates — the agency row. Free is two scenarios and a 15-minute interval. Skip Make if nobody will name the modules after the vendor webinar. Skip it if you needed to self-host. That is n8n. Skip it if the first job is 'Slack me when the form fires.'

  • Best for: ops engineers and agencies who think in diagrams and will maintain the scenario
  • Skip if: you needed a zap this week, a VPC, or a GTM table
  • Honest watch-out: a sloppy iterator is how Make feels expensive and Zapier felt simpler. Design the path.

Head-to-head, by job

Form-to-Slack, ticket-to-sheet, the first three zaps

Zapier. Faster to publish. A catalog the marketer already half-owns. Make can do this and will feel like homework. If the complaint after a month is 'we never turned it on,' you bought the wrong canvas — not the wrong price.

Branching, iterators, a scenario with error handling

Make. This is the job most 'Zapier feels linear' tickets should have named. Paths exist on Zapier Professional. They are not Make's canvas. If you are stacking zaps to fake a router, you are already paying in hours. Stay on Zapier only if nobody will maintain a diagram.

AI inside the graph

A draw on the job, a loss if you buy the logo. Zapier: AI by Zapier on paid plans, Copilot in the editor, Agents as a second bill. Make: AI modules, an AI toolkit, agents as modules you can see. Neither is an autonomous coworker. Empty prompts still invent last quarter's SKU. Review the first hundred runs. The agents ranking is the version if the pitch said coworker.

Agencies running one machine for several clients

Make, usually, once templates and a shared canvas are the job — Teams when roles matter. Zapier Team can share folders and connections. The shops that stay on Zapier treat each client as three linear zaps. The shops that move already had a spaghetti graph. Do not migrate a quiet Zapier account because a directory said 'agencies use Make.' The agency-stack guide is the desk around the zap.

Price, honestly

Make's entry paid row is cheaper than Zapier Professional on the sticker — if you compare 10,000 credits to 750 tasks and ignore what a step costs. That comparison is how this category lies. A Zapier task and a Make credit are not the same unit. AI steps and code time break both meters. A Make scenario with a sloppy iterator can outrun a quiet Zapier Professional. A Zapier graph that fires an AI step on every row can outrun Make Core. Count runs you will actually keep on, then open both sliders. If the cheaper logo is the whole argument, you are shopping for a teaser, not a program.

When neither should win

n8n if residency or git-next-to-the-graph is the objection — Cloud is still not Zapier-simple; self-host is an ops job. Clay if the row is an account. Power Automate if you already live in 365 and that is the whole program. Workato or Tray if you already standardized there. A 40-template Chrome extension you will not open in week four is not a third score.

What neither tool should be

  • Your GTM table. That is Clay.
  • Your hosted workflow runtime. That is n8n.
  • Your coworker. That is the agents ranking, and it is a different trust decision.
  • A reason to skip the mapping. A prettier canvas will not invent a program.
  • A brand desk or a help desk. Jasper and Fin do not become cheaper if you zap them.
Zapier is what we open when the expensive part is that nothing is wired. Make is what we open when the zap grew up. Mixing them up is how you buy a canvas nobody maintains — or a pile of zaps that is already a machine.Aiacent comparison, 2026

Verdict

Nothing wired, a marketer who will map three fields, optional AI classify: Zapier Professional, annual if the zaps already survived Free. Routers, iterators, a scenario you will name and keep: Make, Core until priority or log search is the wall, Teams when an agency needs roles. Both can coexist. Graph next to the repo: n8n. Row is an account: Clay. Then read Zapier alternatives if you are trying not to buy Zapier, is Zapier worth it if the fight is the subscription, and the automation ranking if you want the scores in one table.

FAQ

Zapier if the job is a handful of reliable zaps and a catalog. Make if the job is a visual machine with routers and iterators. The cheaper sticker is a myth if you buy the wrong canvas.
