ChatGPT agent mode
A watched browser loop inside ChatGPT — not Operator as a separate app, and not a coworker.

The Aiacent take
ChatGPT agent mode is the 2026 product people still search as Operator: a ChatGPT session that can use a browser and tools, loop, and come back with a result you should still read. Operator was the earlier research-preview surface. The help article we cite is ChatGPT agent. Mixing those names is how you buy a second logo for a button that already sits on Plus.
We score it 7.4 as the agent inside the ChatGPT tab — under Cursor (8.6) on the agents ranking, under Zapier (8.3) when the loop is a graph, and under ChatGPT's own 8.3 writing-seat score, which is a different job. This is not an AI employee. The agents ranking already declined that row.
Availability and message buckets come from OpenAI Help, 'ChatGPT agent' (help.openai.com/en/articles/11752874-chatgpt-agent), checked 19 September 2026: available on Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu; not on Free. Monthly agent-message limits on that page: Plus 40, Pro 400, Business and Enterprise 40; flexible Business / Enterprise pricing 30 credits per agent message. Plus is $20 a month on the same ChatGPT plan ladder we cite on is ChatGPT Plus worth it. Pro is $100 or $200 — the $200 20× sign-up pause from that Plus page still applies; confirm chatgpt.com/pricing. We will not invent an Operator SKU, a coworker sticker, or an Impact URL.
Product look
ChatGPT agent mode
Figure slot. No vendor screenshot until we have a rights-cleared file.
Pros
- The loop lives in the ChatGPT tab you may already pay for — not a second Operator app
- Plus is a real 40-message taste if you will actually launch agent mode
- Pro's 400-message bucket is the honest climb when Plus is already the wall
Cons
- Not on Free. Buying Plus 'for the agent' and never clicking it is a $20 costume
- It is not Cursor, not Zapier, not a headcount substitute
- You still watch the browser. Unattended 'I handled it' is how this page exists
Who it's for
- Plus users who will actually start agent mode on a named web task this week
- Pro users who already burned the 40-message Plus bucket on work they shipped
- Ops people who needed a watched browser loop and already rejected a second agent app
Who should skip it
- Anyone still on Free — agent mode is not included
- Engineers whose loop is a repo (Cursor) or a terminal (Claude Code)
- Ops whose loop is 'when this happens' (Zapier) or a digital employee keynote
What matters in the product
Agent mode in the ChatGPT tab
Browser, tools, a loop. You still own the send. A result you will not read is a more expensive search.
Message buckets, not unlimited
40 on Plus / Business / Enterprise. 400 on Pro. Flexible seats meter credits. Treat the help-article numbers as checkout rows — they move.
Operator is a search term
The earlier preview. Do not buy a second product because a 2025 recap said Operator shipped as its own app.
Verdict
Use the Plus bucket when a watched web loop is already the week. Climb to Pro when 40 messages are the wall. Do not buy it as Operator, Cursor, Zapier, or a hire.
