The Aiacent take

Clearscope is the content optimization tool we recommend when the writer already has a draft and the editor needs a grown-up coverage score. Google Docs, Word, a topic report, terms that read like an outline instead of a stuffing list. The teams that like it are editorial. The teams that hate it wanted Surfer AI to write the page.

We ranked it second because quality-of-grade is a real job. Surfer is the broader workflow. Frase is the cheaper end-to-end. MarketMuse is the planner. ChatGPT will not tell you what the top results cover unless you make it, and it will hallucinate the SERP.

Skip it if $129/month is the strategy, or if you needed a crawler-and-rewrite agent. That second buyer is shopping Frase.

Clearscope — Best editor-grade SEO score. Best for: Editors and SEO teams that draft in Docs or Word and wanted a trusted coverage score. Pros

  • The grade editors will actually keep open in Google Docs
  • Recommendations feel less like a keyword-stuffing dare than cheaper tools
  • Now tracks AI-search visibility without abandoning the optimize job

Cons

  • More expensive than Frase if you wanted research, draft, and publish in one login
  • Not a MarketMuse-class inventory of the whole domain
  • A high score still ships a bad page if the brief was 'mention these terms'

Who it's for

  • Content leads who edit in Docs and refuse sludge
  • SEO teams that brief humans, not an autowriter
  • Brands that care how the page reads after it ranks

Who should skip it

  • Budgets that needed research-to-CMS in one cheaper seat (Frase)
  • Strategists who needed a site-wide gap analysis (MarketMuse)
  • People who will not draft without an autowriter (Surfer AI or ChatGPT — with a human)

What matters in the product

Optimize in Docs

The product. A score next to the draft you are already in. If the team will not open Docs, you bought a report.

Topic reports

What to cover, questions to answer, a sense of depth. Not a MarketMuse inventory.

AI visibility add-ons

The 2026 extra. Useful. Not a reason to leave Surfer if the rest of the workflow already lives there.

Verdict

The editor's SEO grade. Buy it when coverage quality is the leak. Buy Surfer for the fuller workflow, Frase for the bill, MarketMuse for the map.
