Elicit is the research tool we would hand someone who has to review a literature, not a landing page. You ask a question. You get a table of papers. You extract methods and findings into columns. That is a real 2026 job, and it is not Perplexity.
We ranked it second on the research page because most 'AI for research' tickets are still a cited-web ticket (Perplexity) or a 'help me think' ticket (ChatGPT). Elicit wins when the sources have to be papers. Consensus wins a faster yes/no from the same corpus. Mixing those up is how a grad student buys Plus and still pastes abstracts into ChatGPT.
Skip Elicit if you will not open the PDFs. A prettier table of hallucinations is still a hallucination. Skip it if the job is a competitor brief — that is Perplexity.
