Obsidian
Local markdown notes you own — AI is a plugin, not the reason to move.
The Aiacent take
Obsidian is the notes app we would hand someone who wants files they own. A vault. Wikilinks. A graph you will screenshot once. AI arrives as Copilot or Smart Connections pointed at your own model keys. That is a different deal than Notion AI, which sits on the page the company already pays for.
We put it on the Notion vs Obsidian page because 'AI notes 2026' is usually a wiki-vs-files ticket, not a model ticket. Notion AI still wins when the knowledge is already in Notion and other people ask it questions. Obsidian wins when you will not put your life's notes in someone else's database.
Skip Obsidian if you needed a team wiki tomorrow. Skip it if you will not install a plugin and an API key. A local folder with no AI is still a fine notes app — do not buy the myth that the graph writes the book.
Most 'Notion vs Obsidian' tickets are a files-vs-wiki ticket. The word AI is doing too much work.
Pros
- The notes are markdown files you can leave with. That still matters
- Copilot, Smart Connections, and friends are real if you will configure them
- Offline, local, and fast in a way a hosted wiki is not
Cons
- AI is not a product you buy from Obsidian. It is a plugin you babysit
- Not a team wiki. Sharing a vault is a project, not a workspace
- The graph looks smart. A pile of unmarked notes is still a pile
Who it's for
- Researchers, writers, and operators who want a personal vault
- People leaving Notion because the notes felt rented
- Anyone who will actually link notes, not just collect them
Who should skip it
- Teams whose source of truth is already Notion (Notion AI)
- People who needed live meeting capture (Otter) or a frontier chat tab (ChatGPT)
- Anyone shopping an 'AI second brain' they will not maintain
What matters in the product
Local markdown vault
The product. If you will not live in files, you bought a hobby.
AI plugins
Copilot, Smart Connections, Text Generator. You bring the model. You read the output.
Sync and Publish
Paid, optional, and not a Notion replacement. Phones and a public site — not a company wiki.
Verdict
The local notes desk. Buy Obsidian when you want files and will configure AI yourself. Stay on Notion AI when the wiki is already the company. Do not move a team for a graph.
