Is Grain worth it in 2026? Conversation intelligence, not a cheaper Gong
Grain is worth it when a sales or CS team will coach from clips and write the CRM — Business is the honest CI seat. It is not worth it as a free recorder, a Fireflies archive, or Gong with a public sticker. Here is the split — and the skip-ifs.

Grain
7.6/10Best public-sticker conversation intelligence
Public-sticker conversation intelligence — not a cheaper Gong, and not a free recorder.
Grain is the correct seat when the expensive part is conversation intelligence you can actually buy without a Gong quote: clips someone will coach from, fields that land on the CRM record, trackers on the words that matter. It is a bad substitute for Fathom when the card was the fight, and a bad substitute for Gong when a manager will review moments as the operating system of a sales floor.
- Best for
- Sales or CS teams that will coach from clips and write the CRM — and will not invent a Gong numeral.
- Skip if
- You needed a $0 recorder (Fathom), an archive-and-CRM notetaker (Fireflies), or a coaching OS with no public sticker (Gong).
Why it ranks
- Conversation intelligence with a public starting numeral — Gong still will not print one
- Business is coaching, trackers, and CRM/dialer — a named seat, not a darker Starter
- Free viewers can watch shared tape; paid seats are the recorders and coaches
Watch-outs
- grain.com/pricing was a messy JS grid the day we opened it — confirm checkout
- It is not Gong. A $29 Business seat will not invent a coaching culture
- It is not Fathom. Buying Business because the card felt unserious is how this page exists

Gong
9.0/10Best revenue intelligence
Revenue intelligence: the calls, the pipeline, the coaching.
Gong records and analyzes customer conversations, then turns them into coaching, forecast risk, and competitive notes. It is the highest-scoring tool in our library because, used well, it changes how a sales org operates — not just how it transcribes.
- Best for
- B2B sales teams that live on calls and need coaching, not just recording.
- Skip if
- You have three sellers and a shared Google Drive of Zoom links.
Why it ranks
- Still the standard for conversation intelligence
- Coaching, deal warnings, and market intel in one place
- Reps actually open it because the recordings are useful
Watch-outs
- Expensive, and you will feel it under ~15 reps
- Can become surveillance theater if managers only use scorecards
- Implementation includes CRM hygiene you may not have

People search 'is Grain worth it' after a manager actually clipped a pricing moment, or after finance asked why a notetaker quote sat next to a conversation-intelligence demo. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed coaching from the tape, last quarter in the CRM, or a $0 recorder, you will buy Business as a cheaper Gong — or skip a working Grain habit because a blog invented a Gong per-seat sticker and called the year expensive.
This is a buyer decision, not a leaked Gong rate card. On Aiacent, Grain scores 7.6 as the public-sticker conversation-intelligence row. Gong scores 9.0 and still leads the sales ranking with licenses plus a platform fee and no public numeral. Gong pricing and is Gong worth it are that contract. Is Fathom worth it is the recorder fork. The sales ranking is the scored desk. The transcription ranking is the notes version. Read this one if the question is the Grain subscription.
The public ladder we checked
| Plan | Public price (confirm cart) | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 — one Notetaker seat on the support article we stand behind | 45-minute meetings, no uploads, 20 bot meetings if you signed up with a personal email. Viewers can watch shared tape. |
| Starter | $15/user/month on Grain's Aug 2026 blog — confirm grain.com/pricing | Unlimited recording, 10 uploads/month, custom templates, Ask Grain, API. Notes and automation — not the CI climb. |
| Business | $29/user/month on that same Grain blog — confirm cart | AI coaching, custom follow-ups, trackers, CRM / dialer, advanced MCP. The conversation-intelligence seat. |
| Enterprise | Quote — sales@grain.com | SSO, extra security, dedicated AM, custom invoicing. Not a darker Business you were afraid to skip. |
- Grain's conversation-intelligence page listed starting pricing at $15 per user. That is the Starter-class numeral we will repeat. It is not Gong's quote.
- All paid seats in a workspace must sit on the same tier (Starter or Business). You can mix paid recorders with free viewers. Inviting every Slack lurker as a paid seat is how the bill inflates.
- Annual billing is cheaper than monthly on Grain's billing article. We could not read a clean annual matrix on the live pricing grid. Confirm the toggle.
- Downgrading to Free deletes content owned by anyone who is not the remaining Notetaker after 30 days, per that Plans article. Export first.
- Gong still publishes a model, not a price — gong.io/pricing, checked 19 September 2026. Anyone printing a 2026 Gong seat invented it.
The worth-it test
| If this is true | Grain is | Buy instead |
|---|---|---|
| A defined B2B or CS motion, and a manager will review moments — not hours — from the tape, on a public sticker | Worth it — that is the product. Business | Stay. Demand CRM and tracker rows in writing. Do not also buy Gong to 'match' the category. |
| You are tasting whether anyone will record and share a clip | Not worth paying — Free is the taste (one Notetaker, 45-minute meetings) | Leave Free the week the 45-minute cap or the missing CRM write-back is the wall |
| The card was the objection and you needed tape plus a recap | Not worth it as the first recorder | Fathom. Is Fathom worth it. The free plan still records without a 45-minute joke. |
| Last quarter has to be searchable and someone will connect HubSpot — no coaching ritual | Not worth it as a Fireflies costume | Fireflies. Is Fireflies worth it. Fireflies pricing. |
| A manager will review moments as the operating system of a sales floor, and you will take a custom quote | Not worth it as Gong | Gong. Is Gong worth it. Gong pricing. A $29 Business seat will not invent the culture. |
| Ask Grain, templates, and an API are named — coaching and CRM field writes are not | Business is not the first seat; Starter might be | Starter at the $15 numeral Grain published — only after Free already survived |
| Legal, SSO, or a BAA is already the conversation | Starter / Business may not be enough | Enterprise on Grain, or stay out. Grain's own blog says BAA sits on Enterprise. |
| Dirty audio is the weekday leak | Not a studio | Krisp. Is Krisp worth it. |
Grain is worth it when the expensive part is clips a manager will actually review
The teams who should pay treat Grain like a junior enablement hire: the call is captured, the moment is clipped, the field lands on the CRM record, someone asks what the last three renewals said about price. Worth it means a $29 Business seat on the numeral Grain published is cheaper than another quarter of folklore in Slack — and cheaper than waiting on a Gong RFP you are not ready to staff. That is a real bill on a mid-market sales or CS desk. It is not a vibe. It is why we score Grain 7.6 instead of folding it into Gong's row or Fathom's free recorder.
If you cannot point at the calls a manager will review this month, you are shopping for a notetaker with a conversation-intelligence badge. Free exists so you can learn that about yourself for $0 — one Notetaker, 45-minute meetings, no uploads, on the Plans article we stand behind. Grain marketing still says 'free forever' and 'no recording cap' on the conversation-intelligence and Grain-vs-Granola pages. We will not flatten those two sentences into one invented Free SKU. Confirm grain.com/pricing.
- Best for: sales and CS teams that will coach from clips and connect HubSpot or Salesforce on day one
- Skip if: you have not used Free's recap, or the leak is unlimited tape / a CRM archive without coaching / Gong-grade ritual
- Honest watch-out: Starter at $15 is notes and an API. Business at $29 is the CI climb. Mixing those up is how you under-buy the job.
Grain is not worth it as a cheaper Gong, Fathom, or Fireflies
Gong still wins when a manager will review moments as the operating system of the floor and you will take a custom quote. Is Gong worth it. Gong pricing is licenses plus a platform fee — no public numeral on gong.io/pricing (19 September 2026). Buying Grain Business because a comparison table printed '$100 per user' next to Gong is how you skip a ritual you were ready to fund, or fund a $29 seat nobody coaches from. Grain's own conversation-intelligence page is the source of that $100 Gong starting row. Treat it as Grain's marketing, not Gong's checkout.
Fathom still wins when the card was the fight. Is Fathom worth it. Free records without a 45-minute cap on the fathom.video/pricing card we opened. Fireflies still wins the archive-without-coaching job at $10 Pro annual. Buying Grain Starter because Fathom felt unserious is how you pay $15 for tape. Buying Business because Fireflies felt 'not CI enough' is how you pay $29 for AskFred you already had. The sales ranking is the scored desk if the leak is the deal.
When Starter, Business, or Enterprise is the real question
Starter is the $15 numeral Grain published — unlimited recording, 10 uploads a month, Ask Grain, custom templates, API. Buy it when Free's 45-minute cap or the missing upload is the weekday job and nobody will coach from a scorecard yet. Skip it if the leak is CRM field writes and trackers. That is Business. Skip it if the leak is tape. That is Fathom Free.
Business is the $29 numeral on that same Grain article. AI coaching, custom follow-ups, trackers, CRM and dialer, advanced MCP. You are buying conversation intelligence, not a prettier transcript. Buy it when a manager will open the scorecard. Skip it so the homepage said 'revenue intelligence.' Enterprise is SSO, extra security, a dedicated AM, custom invoicing. Grain's own Grain-vs-Granola article puts the BAA on Enterprise. Do not open it because Starter felt lonely.
What 'worth it' is not
- A word-error-rate lab or a Grain-vs-Gong trophy. We did not invent Gong's $100 starting row; Grain's marketing page did. We will not pretend Gong published it.
- A monthly-versus-annual matrix we could not read cleanly on grain.com/pricing the day we looked.
- A coupon hunt. No invented Impact or via= IDs.
- A reason to skip Gong when the ritual is the company and you will take the quote.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either a manager clipped a moment and the field landed on the record, or the workspace is a graveyard of unwatched tape. If you paid Business and never opened a scorecard, it was not worth $29. If Ask Grain plus a clip replaced a Slack thread that used to start with 'what did they say,' it was. That is the whole audit. Is Gong worth it if the leftover job was the ritual. Is Fathom worth it if the leftover job was tape. The sales ranking if you want the scores next to Apollo and Clay.
Grain is worth it when the expensive part is clips a manager will actually review. It is not worth it when one person wanted a cheaper Gong, a free recorder, or an archive with a conversation-intelligence badge. Mixing those up is how you pay per seat and generate scorecards nobody opens.— Aiacent, 2026
Verdict
Worth it: a manager will review moments and someone will connect the CRM — Business at the $29 numeral Grain published, Starter at $15 only if coaching is not yet the job. Not worth it: tape on a $0 card (is Fathom worth it), last quarter without coaching (Fireflies), a coaching OS you will staff (is Gong worth it — Gong pricing). Then read the sales ranking if the leak is the deal, the transcription ranking if the leak is the note, and a sane AI sales stack if you are trying not to buy Grain, Gong, Clay, and a mystery copilot in one quarter.
