Is Fathom worth it in 2026? A meeting-recorder decision, not a cheaper Fireflies
Fathom is worth it when you needed unlimited tape plus a recap — Free first, Premium when summaries cap out. It is not worth it as a cheaper Otter, a Fireflies archive, or a Gong. Here is the split — and the skip-ifs.

Fathom
7.7/10Best free-to-start meeting recorder
The meeting recorder people actually keep on the free plan.
Fathom won by being the recorder you did not have to justify. Unlimited recordings and transcripts on free. Instant summaries. Clips. Zoom, Meet, and Teams. That is why it shows up in founder Slack more than tools with a prettier enterprise deck.
- Best for
- Individuals and small teams who need unlimited recordings and a recap they will share.
- Skip if
- You needed live captions, a CRM-first archive, or notes that already live in Notion.
Why it ranks
- The free plan still records and transcribes without a 300-minute joke
- Clips and recaps people will actually drop in Slack
- Bot-free capture exists now (Mac beta) if the participant list was the fight
Watch-outs
- Free AI summaries are capped — unlimited tape is not unlimited Ask Fathom
- Team and CRM features are the paid product, not the landing-page story
- Not Otter for live captions, not Fireflies for a long archive, not Gong for coaching

Fireflies.ai
7.8/10Best searchable meeting archive
The searchable meeting archive that will talk to your CRM.
Fireflies is the meeting assistant for teams that will actually search last month. Transcripts, summaries, soundbites, and a CRM write-back. Sales and CS orgs that live in HubSpot recognize it. A founder who needed captions in the room will bounce — that is still Otter. Fireflies alternatives is the buyer-intent version if you are trying not to buy it.
- Best for
- Teams that need to search last quarter's calls and push notes into HubSpot or Salesforce.
- Skip if
- You needed live captions, a bot-free recorder, or Gong-grade coaching.
Why it ranks
- AskFred across the archive is the feature people keep paying for
- CRM and Slack push is a real workflow, not a slide
- Cheaper than Gong when the job is search and recap, not coaching
Watch-outs
- Another bot in the participant list unless you fight it
- Not live captions the way Otter is
- Credit math on 'AI skills' can surprise a team that thought Pro was unlimited everything

People search 'is Fathom worth it' after the free recorder actually survived a month of back-to-backs, or after finance asked why a notetaker costs more than a $20 chat tab. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed unlimited tape, live captions in the room, last quarter in HubSpot, or a coaching culture, you will buy Team as a cheaper Fireflies and still miss March — or skip Free because a competitor's webinar said free plans are a trap.
This is a buyer decision, not a review recap. On Aiacent, Fathom scores 7.7 as the free-to-start meeting recorder — third on the transcription ranking on purpose. Otter wins live notes. Fireflies wins the archive. Fathom wins the card-was-the-objection seat. Fireflies vs Otter is the two-way if those logos are already in the deck. Is Fireflies worth it and Otter pricing are the sibling bills. The transcription ranking is the scored table. Read this one if the question is the Fathom subscription.
The public ladder we checked
| Plan | Public price (confirm cart) | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Free (individuals) | $0 — unlimited recordings + transcriptions | Tape, instant summaries, clips, search, bot or bot-free (Mac beta). The reason Fathom is on this site. |
| Premium (individuals) | $20/month, or $16/month billed annually | Advanced summaries, AI action items, conversational assistant, custom meeting bot — when Free's brain is the wall |
| Team | $19/user/month, or $15/user/month billed annually (2-user min) | Shared library, playlists, comments, folders, keyword alerts — a workspace, not a prettier recap |
| Business | $34/user/month, or $25/user/month billed annually (2-user min) | CRM field sync, Deal View, coaching metrics / AI scorecards, custom summaries |
| Enterprise | Talk to sales | SSO/SCIM, org-wide security, custom retention, Launch Assist, a dedicated CSM |
- Free still records and transcribes without Otter's 300-minute joke. Instant summaries sit on Free. Advanced summaries and action items are the Premium climb on the grid we opened.
- Team is a 2-user minimum at $15 annual. One person who wanted a shared folder is not a Team buyer — they are a Premium buyer, or still Free.
- Business is CRM field sync and coaching metrics. That is closer to Grain / Fireflies territory. Prove the library first. Fathom vs Fireflies is that fight.
- Bot-free capture is a Mac beta on the page we opened. Do not buy Premium so a deck said 'no bot.' Confirm whether that beta is the machine you actually use.
The worth-it test
| If this is true | Fathom is | Buy instead |
|---|---|---|
| The card was the objection and you needed unlimited tape plus a recap someone will share | Worth it — Free. That is the product | Stay on Free until advanced summaries or a shared library is the wall |
| You are in back-to-backs and Free's summary / action-item brain is already the weekday wall | Worth Premium — that is the paid individual seat | Premium at $16 annual if the habit already survived Free |
| Several people have to share the same library, playlists, and keyword alerts | Premium is not enough; Team might be | Team — only after Free/Premium already survived, and you have two seats to bill |
| The job is live captions in the room — someone glances while it happens | Not worth it as a captioner | Otter. Is Otter worth it. Otter pricing. Fireflies vs Otter if both leftover logos are open. |
| Last quarter has to be searchable and someone will connect HubSpot on day one | Not worth it as the first archive | Fireflies. Is Fireflies worth it. Fireflies vs Otter. Fathom vs Fireflies is this page's cousin. |
| CRM field sync, Deal View, or scorecards are already named — and you will coach from them | Team is not enough; Business might be | Business at $25 annual — or Grain / Gong if conversation intelligence is the company. Is Grain worth it. Is Gong worth it. |
| The meeting is a deal and coaching is the operating system of the floor | Not worth it as Gong | Gong. A $25 Business seat will not invent the ritual. |
| The notes already have to sit on a Notion page next to the spec | Not worth it as the only seat | Notion AI. Transcription ranking. |
Fathom is worth it when the expensive part is tape you refused to pay for
The people who should start here treat Fathom like a recorder they did not have to justify: the bot (or the Mac beta) joins, the recap lands, someone drops a clip in Slack. Worth it on Free means $0 is cheaper than another week of 'I'll write it up after' that never happens. Worth it on Premium means $16 a year-toggle month is cheaper than living on Free's summary cap. That is a real bill for a founder or an IC. It is not a vibe. It is why Fathom still sits at 7.7 as the free-to-start recorder — not the live-caption pick, not the archive pick.
If you cannot point at the calls you will actually record this month, you are shopping for a second participant with a prettier homepage. Free exists so you can learn that about yourself for $0. The founder take on /tools/fathom is still the split: most 'we need Otter' tickets from a five-person company are a Fathom free-plan ticket with extra procurement.
- Best for: founders and ICs who needed tape plus a recap and will not expense a fourth notetaker
- Skip if: you needed live captions, a CRM-first archive, or a coaching OS
- Honest watch-out: unlimited tape is not unlimited Ask Fathom / advanced summaries. The brain is the paid climb.
Fathom is not worth it as a cheaper Otter, Fireflies, or Gong
Otter wins live captions in the room. Is Otter worth it. Otter pricing is the minute math — Basic 300 minutes, Pro about $8.33 annual, Business about $19.99 annual on otter.ai/pricing (19 September 2026). Buying Premium because Otter felt 'too product' is how you miss the live transcript you booked the meeting for. Fireflies vs Otter is the longer why if both leftover logos are already in the meeting.
Fireflies wins last quarter in HubSpot. Is Fireflies worth it. Fireflies Pro is $10 a user billed annually, $18 month-to-month, in the billing knowledge base we already stand behind (guide.fireflies.ai). Buying Fathom Business because Fireflies felt like 'another bot' is how you pay $25 for CRM field sync you could have proven on a $10 archive seat. Fathom vs Fireflies is that two-way. Gong wins a coaching culture. Is Gong worth it. A Fathom scorecard will not invent Monday reviews.
When Team, Business, or Enterprise is the real question
Team is $15 a user billed annually, $19 monthly, two-user minimum. Shared search, playlists of highlights, comments, folders, keyword alerts. You are buying a library, not a prettier individual recap. Buy it when two people already live in Fathom and the fight is 'I cannot find their calls.' Skip it if you are one login. Skip it if the leak is HubSpot write-back — that is Business, or Fireflies.
Business is $25 a user billed annually, $34 monthly, still a two-user minimum. CRM field sync, Deal View, coaching metrics, custom summaries. Buy it when those rows are named and someone will own the mapping. Skip it as a Gong costume. Enterprise is SSO/SCIM, custom retention, Launch Assist, a dedicated CSM — talk to sales on the page we opened. Do not open Enterprise because Premium ran out of 'advanced' summaries.
What 'worth it' is not
- A word-error-rate lab. We did not run 400-call bake-offs or invent a review count.
- A coupon hunt. If there is a live trial deal it lives on /deals. We do not invent codes or partner URLs.
- A reason to treat Free as unlimited Ask Fathom. Tape is the uncapped part. The brain is the climb.
- Cheaper than Fireflies if you needed the archive. It is cheaper than another week of meetings nobody recorded.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either someone dropped a clip or opened a recap twice, or the library is a graveyard of unwatched tape. If you paid Premium and never hit Free's summary wall, it was not worth $16. If the week starts with a Fathom recap instead of 'I'll write it up,' it was. That is the whole audit. Is Fireflies worth it if the leftover job was March in HubSpot. Fireflies vs Otter if both leftover logos are already open.
Fathom is worth it when the expensive part is tape you refused to pay for. It is not worth it when one person wanted live captions, a CRM archive, or a coaching OS with a free-recorder badge. Mixing those up is how you pay per seat and generate recaps nobody opens.— Aiacent, 2026
Verdict
Worth it: unlimited tape plus a recap — Free first, Premium at $16 annual when the brain is the wall, Team at $15 annual when two people share the library. Business only when CRM field sync and scorecards are named. Not worth it: live captions (is Otter worth it — Otter pricing), last quarter in HubSpot (is Fireflies worth it — Fireflies vs Otter), coaching a sales floor (is Gong worth it). Then read Fathom vs Fireflies if both leftover logos are already in the deck, and the transcription ranking if you want the scores next to Otter and Notion AI.
