LanguageTool

The privacy-friendlier overlay — grammar in the box, without GrammarlyGO theater.

7.7/10Best privacy-friendly overlayUpdated September 19, 2026

The Aiacent take

LanguageTool is the Grammarly alternative that is actually an overlay. Browser extension, Google Docs, desktop, a Premium style layer, and a self-host story privacy teams can hear. It is not a generator. It is not a brand desk. Mixing those up is how Grammarly alternatives pages become a chatbot dump.

We put it first on the alternatives list because most 'Grammarly is too expensive' tickets needed a cheaper checker, not Claude. Premium is the honest personal plan. Self-host is the honest security plan. Grammarly still wins when tone, generative rewrite, and a polished enterprise overlay are the job.

Pros

  • A real overlay that lives in the browser, Docs, and desktop — not a chat tab
  • Self-host and EU-friendly options that a Grammarly enterprise slide will not match
  • Multilingual checking that is the actual product for many teams

Cons

  • Generative rewrite is thinner than GrammarlyGO
  • Brand-tone enterprise is why people still pay Grammarly Business
  • Will not become Jasper, ChatGPT, or Writer if you squint

Who it's for

  • Privacy-conscious and multilingual teams that write in many boxes
  • Individuals who wanted grammar without a generative upsell

Who should skip it

  • Companies that already like Grammarly Business brand tones
  • Anyone whose leak is a campaign, a model, or a knowledge graph

What matters in the product

Checking everywhere

The product. If the extension is blocked, you bought a website. Same rule as Grammarly.

Premium style and self-host

Why it is a real alternative. Style rules and an optional server you control. Not a yes-machine.

Verdict

The overlay alternative. Buy Premium or self-host when Grammarly's generative seat is the complaint. Do not buy it because you needed Jasper, ChatGPT, or Writer.
