n8n

The workflow you can host — AI nodes included, ops required.

7.9/10Best self-host automationUpdated September 19, 2026

The Aiacent take

n8n is the automation tool we would start a technical team on when Zapier's task meter or data-residency story is the actual objection. Node-based workflows, self-host or Cloud, AI nodes that are still nodes. That is the product. It is not a Zapier-but-free for a marketer who will not SSH.

We ranked it third because the job is real and because 'Zapier AI alternatives 2026' often means this page's power-user fork. Make is the hosted visual cousin. Zapier is the default. n8n is the one you run. Clay is still the GTM table — do not rebuild enrichment as a cluster of HTTP nodes unless you enjoy it.

Cloud is a subscription. Self-host is free software plus the pager. Skip both if the first workflow is 'Slack me when the form fires' and nobody will maintain a box.

n8n is what we open when the zap has to live next to the repo. Zapier is what we open when it has to live next to the intern.

Pros

  • You can put the graph next to the rest of your stack
  • AI nodes, LangChain-style chains, and HTTP without waiting on a vendor connector
  • Fair-code model that technical teams actually finish

Cons

  • Self-host is an ops job. Cloud is still not Zapier-simple
  • The catalog is thinner than Zapier's for long-tail SaaS — you will write HTTP
  • Easy to confuse 'we can host it' with 'we have a workflow program'

Who it's for

  • Engineering-adjacent ops teams with a VPC or a homelab habit
  • Companies that will not send every payload through a US SaaS
  • Builders who already think in git, queues, and retries

Who should skip it

  • Non-technical teams shopping a zap this week (Zapier)
  • Visual builders who wanted Make's canvas and a vendor to page
  • RevOps who needed Clay, not another HTTP node

What matters in the product

Self-host or Cloud

The fork. Host it if residency or cost at volume is the leak. Cloud if you still wanted n8n without the box. Neither is a Zapier onboarding.

AI nodes

Real. Still a node. Prompt, model, structured output. Review the first hundred runs. A self-hosted hallucination is still a hallucination.

Code when the connector is missing

Why technical teams stay. Also why a marketer should not start here.

Verdict

The self-host automation graph. Buy n8n when you will treat workflows like software. Buy Zapier when you will not. Do not buy it as a free Zapier.
