Is n8n worth it in 2026? A software decision, not a free Zapier
n8n is worth it when someone will treat workflows like code — self-host or Cloud. It is not worth it as a free Zapier, a prettier Make, or a Clay costume. Here is the split, and the skip-ifs.

n8n is the automation tool we would start a technical team on when Zapier's task meter or data-residency story is the actual objection. Node-based workflows, self-host or Cloud, AI nodes that are still nodes. That is the product. It is not a Zapier-but-free for a marketer who will not SSH.

People search 'is n8n worth it' after a blog called it free Zapier, or after finance asked why a workflow tool now has a pager. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed a graph next to the repo, a hosted execution meter, or a zap a marketer will publish on Thursday, you will self-host a box nobody pages — or buy Cloud Business because Starter felt lonely.

- Zapier Professional commonly starts at $19.99 a month billed annually for 750 tasks. A task is a step. An n8n execution is the whole run. They are not the same unit.
- Make Core is the canvas cousin — about $9 a month yearly at 10,000 credits on the ladder we cite. Make vs Zapier is that two-way.

n8n is worth it when the expensive part is the graph you will run
The teams who should pay treat n8n like software: a workflow in git, a retry they can explain, an HTTP node when the long-tail connector is missing. Worth it means Cloud Starter at €20 a month billed annually — or Community plus a box you already know how to page — is cheaper than pretending Zapier is a VPC. That is a real objection in a company that promised payloads would stay in-region. It is not a vibe. It is why we score n8n 7.9 as the self-host pick, under Zapier on the default zap and under Make on the canvas.
If you cannot point at the workflow someone will still open in week four, you are shopping for a free logo. The ops stack still starts with the system you already have. Do not self-host because a thread said 'AI automation OS.'

Zapier wins the zap a marketer will publish. Professional is about $20 a month yearly at 750 tasks — is Zapier worth it. Make wins the diagram. Clay wins the account row. Buying n8n because Zapier 'feels expensive' is how you discover the pager. Buying Business at €667 a month because Pro felt small is how you invent an SSO project you did not have. n8n vs Zapier is the two-way. n8n pricing is the climb.
When Cloud Pro or Business is the real question
Starter is the hosted taste: 2,500 executions, one shared project. Pro is the production row for a builder who will look at history. Business is SSO, git, and environments — a security conversation, not a darker Pro. Skip Business if you have not outgrown Pro's execution bucket. Skip Pro if Community already runs and the only missing piece is a person.
What 'worth it' is not
- A bake-off. We did not run 400 workflows or invent a review count.
- A coupon. If a live trial deal exists it lives on /deals. We do not invent codes or partner URLs.
- A promise that €20 is 2,500 Zapier tasks. An execution is a full run.
- Cheaper than Zapier Free. Zapier Free is a real teaser. n8n is a software climb. Name the runtime first.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either someone merged a workflow and it ran without a hero, or they did not. If Cloud sat as an unpaid Zapier, it was not worth it. If a payload stayed where you said it would, it was. n8n vs Zapier tells you which leftover job is the managed zap. The ops stack tells you whether the leak was glue, the wiki, or the week.
