Claude is the ChatGPT alternative we would actually switch to for writing, not the one we would buy to save money. Same $20 band. Different temperament: longer context, fewer swaggering citations, better at 'read this pile and do not hallucinate the brief.' - Claude Pro and Google AI Pro land in the same consumer band if you are paying. You are not saving money. You are buying temperament and surface.
- Claude Code is included on paid Claude plans and draws from the same usage pool as chat. Buying Pro and expecting an unlimited terminal agent is how you hit the weekly cap mid-refactor.
- Jules is Google's async coding agent (beta, 18+, English). Antigravity is the agentic development platform on the subscriptions page we opened. Both ride Google AI Pro / Ultra — they are not this Gemini chat tab.

Buy Claude if the diff has to survive a skeptical reviewer
Claude earns the coding seat when you paste the module, the failing test, the ugly legacy file, and you want fewer swaggering helpers. Longer context. Better at holding a constraint across a long read. More likely to tell you the abstraction is a nothingburger. The teams that like it treat Claude like a careful staff engineer. The teams that hate it wanted twenty one-line fixes and got a lecture.
Pro is $20 — or about $17 if you pay $200 up front (anthropic.com/pricing, 19 September 2026). The same band as Google AI Pro. Switching from Gemini 'to code better' without changing the brief is how you get a calmer version of the same empty patch. Skip Claude if the file already lives next to a Colab or a Doc and you will not open a second tab. Skip it if you needed Tab in the editor — Copilot. Gemini earns the coding seat when the notebook is Colab, the design doc is a Doc, the ticket is in a Workspace you will not leave, or the next agent is Jules / Antigravity on a Google AI plan you already have. As a naked chat tab, Claude still feels more dependable on a thick PR. Inside the Google surface, a worse helper in the file you will actually run beats a better memo in a tab you will paste from.
Google AI Pro is the everyday paid seat — about $20 a month on the Gemini review; confirm the live card. Ultra starts at $99.99 (5x) or $199.99 (20x) on gemini.google/subscriptions the day we checked. Buy Ultra for usage and agent limits, not because a keynote said Antigravity. Skip Gemini if you do not run Google. Skip it if the job is a long messy codebase a careful model should push back on. Claude is that job. Microsoft shops should be on Copilot, not in this fight.

Long files, migrations, 'read this folder'
Claude. It holds a thread. It is less likely to restart the architecture every 400 lines. Gemini can take a long paste and a Drive dump; it gets more useful when the dump is already in Workspace than when you are shopping a careful reader. If the folder is the work and you wanted an agent inside it, you are on Claude Code or Cursor — not a better chat tab.
Colab, Docs, and Google-native agents
Gemini. Help me write next to the notebook. Jules if the job is an async coding agent on a Google AI plan (beta — capacity not guaranteed, Google's own footnote). Antigravity if you meant Google's agentic IDE, not this chat tab. Claude if you will keep a separate tab anyway — and most people who bought Claude for the pile will. The honest stack for a Workspace shop that also reviews thick PRs is often Gemini in the notebook and Claude on the messy diff. That is allowed.
Code review and explanation
Claude if you paste the PR plus the surrounding modules and want a pass that respects them. Gemini if you wanted 'explain this function' next to a Doc or a slide already in Drive. Neither replaces a human reviewer on something with your name on the merge.
In-editor completions and agent workspaces
Neither chat tab. Copilot is Tab. Cursor is the workspace. Claude Code is the terminal agent on a Claude seat. Jules / Antigravity are Google's agent-shaped products on a Google AI seat. Split, with a lean to Claude when the test file is long and the constraint is 'do not invent an assertion.' Gemini when the test lives next to a Colab you will actually run. Taste is personal. Do not pick a model from a tweet about a leetcode screenshot. Ship through CI.
