Is Beehiiv worth it in 2026? A newsletter-platform decision, not a vibe check
Beehiiv is worth it when you will grow and monetize a list you own. It is not worth it as a cheaper Substack, a Mailchimp costume, or a writing seat. Launch is the taste. Scale is the first honest paid climb. Here is the split — and the skip-ifs.

Beehiiv
8.0/10Best newsletter growth platform
A growth-and-monetization newsletter desk — not a cheaper Substack, and not Mailchimp with a hoodie.
Beehiiv is the correct desk when the expensive part is growing and monetizing a list you own: a send, a site, ads, paid subscriptions that do not take 10%, automations someone will actually turn on. It is a bad substitute for Substack when the expensive part is being found next to other writers, and a bad substitute for Mailchimp when the expensive part is a campaign you already know how to send. Forcing a single trophy is how you pay $49 a month for a third newsletter costume and still live in a Substack notes feed.
- Best for
- Operators who will grow and monetize a list they own — ads, paid subs at 0% take, a site, automations.
- Skip if
- You needed Substack's discovery network, a Mailchimp send you already open, or a draft (ChatGPT).
Why it ranks
- 0% take on paid subscriptions — you keep the sub, minus Stripe
- Launch is a real free send to 2,500 with unlimited emails
- Ads, recommendations, a site, and automations are the product — not a costume
Watch-outs
- No Substack-shaped discovery network. Growth is yours to staff
- Scale is a fixed bill before paid revenue shows up
- Max and subscriber-tier stickers live on a calculator — a leftover $99 floor is folklore
Product look
Beehiiv
Figure slot. No vendor screenshot until we have a rights-cleared file.
People search 'is Beehiiv worth it' after a Tuesday issue actually shipped from a desk they own, or after finance asked why a newsletter platform now costs more than ChatGPT Plus. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed growth and monetization, a writer network, or a campaign you already send, you will stay on Launch until 2,501 subscribers is a surprise — or climb to Max because a webinar said 'media OS.'
This is a buyer decision, not a lab. On Aiacent, Beehiiv scores 8.0 as the newsletter growth platform. Substack scores 7.8 as the writer network. Mailchimp scores 7.8 as the simple email AI. The email ranking is the scored send. The newsletter-writer stack is the order of operations — draft, then list, then send. Free AI tools is where a writer actually starts without a card. Read this one if the question is the Beehiiv subscription.
The public ladder we checked
| Plan | Public price (confirm cart) | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | $0 — up to 2,500 subscribers, unlimited email sends | A real taste of the send, site, and podcast tools. Not a monetization desk. |
| Scale | From $49/month — subscriber tiers climb | Ads, recommendations, 0% take on paid subs, automations, digital products, up to 3 publications |
| Max | Next paid climb on the same calculator | Branding off, dynamic content, priority support, up to 10 publications vs 3 on Scale |
| Enterprise | Quote | 100k+ subscribers, dedicated IP, SSO, a CSM. Not a darker Max toggle. |
- Beehiiv's FAQ: 0% take on paid subscription revenue, minus Stripe 2.9% + $0.30. Substack's help article is 10% plus Stripe plus 0.7% billing. That is the honest two-way — Substack vs Beehiiv.
- Launch includes unlimited sends to 2,500. You are not buying more emails when you climb. You are buying monetization, analytics, and the growth desk.
- Help (22 June 2026) says Scale/Max support 100k active subscribers across the workspace, then Enterprise. The $49 floor is the 1,000-subscriber-shaped start — the slider moves.
- We will not invent an Impact URL, a leftover Boost SKU, or a Kit / ConvertKit sticker we did not open as a live vendor card.
The worth-it test
| If this is true | Beehiiv is | Buy instead |
|---|---|---|
| You will grow and monetize a list you own — ads, paid subs, a site, automations | Worth it — that is the product. Scale when Launch's wall is named | Stay on Scale. Confirm the subscriber tier before you prepay a year |
| You are tasting whether anyone will send from a real desk | Not worth paying — Launch is the taste | Leave Launch the week monetization or subscriber 2,501 is the launch |
| The expensive part is being found next to other writers | Not worth it as the only seat | Substack. Substack vs Beehiiv. |
| The expensive part is a campaign you already send in Mailchimp | Not worth it as a migration costume | Mailchimp. The email ranking. |
| The leak is the sentence, not the list | Not worth it | ChatGPT — free AI tools, then the writing ranking. The newsletter stack starts with the issue. |
| Owned ecommerce flows are the P&L | Not worth it as the retention OS | Klaviyo. Is Klaviyo worth it. HubSpot vs Klaviyo. |
| Paid subscription revenue is already well above $490 a month and discovery still works | Maybe — run the 10% vs $49 arithmetic, then name the job | Substack vs Beehiiv before you migrate a paying list for a slide |
Beehiiv is worth it when the expensive part is a list you will grow
The teams who should pay treat Beehiiv like a media desk they will actually staff: a send, a recommend graph, a sponsor, a paid tier that does not take 10%. Worth it means Scale at $49 a month is cheaper than another quarter of 'we'll just stay on Substack' while ads and a site sit on a slide. That is a real bill on a creator or small media desk. It is not a vibe. It is why we score Beehiiv 8.0 as the newsletter growth platform — not the writer-network pick, not the simple-send pick.
If you cannot point at the monetization or the growth motion you will turn on this month, you are shopping for a prettier theme. Launch exists so you can learn that about yourself for $0. The newsletter-writer stack still starts with the issue you will rewrite — ChatGPT, then a list. Do not buy Scale because a thread said Beehiiv is 'what serious newsletters use.'
- Best for: writers and media brands who will own the list and the monetization
- Skip if: you have not filled Launch, or the leak is discovery / a Mailchimp send / the draft
- Honest watch-out: a Scale month that sits on one send and no ads is more expensive than Launch plus a Substack note
Beehiiv is not worth it as a cheaper Substack, Mailchimp, or ChatGPT
Substack wins when the next reader comes from the network. Mailchimp wins a campaign you already understand. ChatGPT wins the draft. Buying Scale because Substack's 10% felt rude at $80 of paid revenue is how you add a $49 invoice and lose the only discovery you had. Buying Scale because Mailchimp felt 'not creator-native' is how you migrate a working send for a hoodie. The email ranking is the scored version. The newsletter stack is the order.
The same no applies if the file was ecommerce flows (Klaviyo), a B2B hub (HubSpot), or a subject-line wrapper that is just ChatGPT. A nicer newsletter OS will not invent a point of view. Mixing those up is how this category wastes a quarter.
When Max is the real question
Max is how Beehiiv sells the company that outgrew one branded send. Official FAQ: branding off, dynamic content, priority support, up to 10 publications versus 3 on Scale. You are buying a white-label and a multi-pub desk, not a prettier editor. Buy it when a second (or tenth) publication is real, or when the Beehiiv badge on the issue is the weekly leak. Skip it if you have not used Scale's ads and automations. Skip it if one newsletter is the whole shop. Max is a more expensive Scale if the tenth publication is folklore.
Do not buy Max because Scale felt lonely and a sales deck said 'media company.' Confirm the calculator — we will not invent the Max floor. Enterprise is the 100k / dedicated-IP / SSO conversation, not a darker Max toggle.
What 'worth it' is not
- An open-rate or deliverability lab. We did not run 400-send bake-offs or invent a review count.
- A coupon hunt. If there is a live trial deal it lives on /deals. We do not invent codes or partner URLs.
- A reason to upgrade for a writing model. The issue still starts in ChatGPT or a human outline.
- Cheaper than Substack's 10% at every revenue number. Run the $49 vs 10% arithmetic, then name the job.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either someone sent from Beehiiv and turned on a growth or paid motion, or they did not. If Scale sat as a prettier theme next to a Substack they still opened, it was not worth $49. If the list lived here and a sponsor, recommend, or paid tier actually ran, it was. That is the whole audit. Substack vs Beehiiv tells you which leftover job belongs in the other tab. The newsletter stack tells you whether the leak was the issue, not the platform.
Beehiiv is worth it when the expensive part is a list you will grow and monetize. It is not worth it when one person wanted a cheaper Substack, a Mailchimp costume, or a writing seat with a newsletter badge. Mixing those up is how you pay $49 and still draft in the other tab.— Aiacent, 2026
Verdict
Worth it: a list you will grow — Launch first, Scale from $49 a month when monetization or 2,501 is the wall. Max only after a second publication or branding-off is named. Not worth it: tasting the send (stay on Launch), discovery (Substack vs Beehiiv), a Mailchimp campaign you already send (email ranking), the draft (free AI tools, then the writing ranking), Shopify flows (Klaviyo). Then read the newsletter-writer stack if you are trying not to buy five logos, and the email ranking if you want the scored send.
