Substack is the correct desk when the expensive part is being found next to other writers and charging for the work. Publishing is free. The meter starts when paid subscriptions start. It is a bad substitute for Beehiiv when the expensive part is ads, a 0% take, or a site and automations you will staff, and a bad substitute for Mailchimp when the expensive part is a campaign calendar you already understand. Mixing those up is how you stay on Substack at $5,000 a month in paid revenue and wonder why $500 left for the network — or leave for Beehiiv and lose the only discovery you had.
