Is Synthesia worth it in 2026? A buyer decision, not a vibe check
Synthesia is worth it when a presenter has to sit on a script you already wrote. It is not worth it as a cheaper Pictory, a HeyGen dialer, or a film. Creator is the working self-serve seat. Here is the split — and the skip-ifs.

- How we rank
Synthesia
8.1/10Best for avatar training video
Avatar video for training, enablement, and company updates — not a film.
Synthesia leads our video ranking because avatar training and enablement is a real department with a budget, and Synthesia is still the default there. Script, avatar, locales. No camera. No editor. That is a different job from text-to-video for marketers.
- Best for
- L&D, enablement, and internal comms teams that need a presenter on camera without a studio.
- Skip if
- You needed to recut a blog into a Reel, or you expected cinematic generation.
Why it ranks
- The grown-up avatar product: scripts in, localized presenter videos out
- Custom avatars and translations are why enterprises keep paying
- Looks like a training video on purpose, which is the job
Watch-outs
- Uncanny if you try to fake a founder brand film
- Wrong tool for blog-to-social recuts (that is Pictory)
- Per-minute economics add up when everyone 'just needs a quick video'
Product look
Synthesia
Figure slot. No vendor screenshot until we have a rights-cleared file.
People search 'is Synthesia worth it' after a stock avatar survived an internal channel, or after finance asked why ten presenter minutes cost $29. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed a face on a training script, a blog recut for social, or a prospect's name in the first line, you will buy Starter because it is $29 and bounce off a ten-minute cap — or take an Enterprise conversation because someone Googled 'best AI video generator.'
This is a buyer decision, not a review recap. On Aiacent, Synthesia scores 8.1 as the avatar-training default — it leads the video ranking for that job, next to HeyGen, Pictory, and Fliki. Synthesia pricing is the minute-and-credit math. Synthesia alternatives is the leave-the-studio guide. Pictory vs Synthesia is the two-way if marketing and L&D are both in the room. The public ladder we checked
| Plan | Public price (confirm cart) | Who it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 — about 10 min/month; watermark; a try-the-editor taste | Not a rollout. Confirm what you can download on the free seat. |
| Starter | $29/mo, or about $18/mo billed annually; about 10 min/month or 120/year | 1 editor, 3 guests, 125+ stock avatars, logo off. Proving the face. |
| Creator | $89/mo, or about $64/mo billed annually; about 30 min/month or 360/year | The working self-serve seat — more avatars, API, personal avatars |
| Enterprise | Custom quote; typically annual | Unlimited minutes on the page we saw, SSO/SAML, SCORM, translations, a CSM |
- Unused minutes do not roll. Hit the cap and you wait or upgrade. That is Synthesia's own FAQ.
- A 59-second clip still spends a minute of allowance. Short social math is worse than a 6-minute training module.
- Studio Express-1 avatars were listed as a paid add-on (about $1,000/year) on annual plans. We will not invent a custom-avatar menu beyond that.
- The old Personal plan is in maintenance. Articles that still sell it as the current checkout are stale.
The worth-it test
| If this is true | Synthesia is | Buy instead |
|---|---|---|
| You already write scripts and a presenter has to sit on them without a studio | Worth it — that is the product. Creator if the calendar is weekly. | Stay. Annual if the face already survived Starter |
| You are tasting whether a stock avatar survives an internal channel | Not worth a year yet — Basic or Starter monthly | Leave if the uncanny valley showed up on week two |
| The input is a blog URL and the output is a captioned social cut | Not worth it | Pictory. Pictory vs Synthesia is the two-way. Pictory pricing is the recut bill. |
| The clip has to say the account's name, in their language | Not worth it as the personalization seat | HeyGen. Synthesia alternatives names that fork. |
| Legal wants SSO, the LMS wants SCORM, or six locales is the point | Starter and Creator are not enough; Enterprise might be | Enterprise — a security and LMS conversation, not a darker Creator |
| The still has to look directed, or the ad is a film | Not worth it | A human, or Runway. A stock presenter will not become a campaign. |
| You needed cheaper text-to-video to prove the channel | Not worth it as the first taste | Fliki. The video ranking is the budget row. |
Synthesia is worth it when the expensive part is the studio you did not book
The teams who should pay treat Synthesia like a presenter they will still write for: a script someone believes, a stock or custom avatar that survives the channel, a locale they would otherwise reshoot. Worth it means a handful of honest modules at about $64 billed yearly is cheaper than another quarterly film shoot for product training. That is a real bill on an L&D or enablement desk. It is not a vibe. It is why Synthesia still leads the video ranking as the avatar-training default — not the recut pick, not the personalization pick.
If you cannot point at the scripts you will actually generate this month, you are shopping for a talking head with a homepage avatar. Basic exists so you can learn that about yourself for $0. Buying Creator because a deck said '90% of the Fortune 100' is how this category wastes a quarter. Wooden copy at Creator prices is just more expensive wood.
- Best for: enablement, L&D, and internal comms that already write scripts and cannot put an exec in a studio every week
- Skip if: you have not written the first ten scripts, or the leak is a blog archive / a name in the first line / a film
- Honest watch-out: ten Starter minutes is not a program. Treating $29 as a studio is how this page exists
Synthesia is not worth it as a cheaper Pictory, HeyGen, or Runway
Pictory wins a URL-to-captioned cut. HeyGen wins the prospect's name. Runway wins a directed camera. Buying Creator because Pictory felt like 'just social' is how you put a presenter on a channel that did not ask for one. Buying Starter because HeyGen felt like 'sales video' is how an avatar studio sits on an outbound sequence. Pictory vs Synthesia names the first fork. Synthesia alternatives names the rest.
The same no applies if the file was a two-hour podcast (Opus Clip), a cheaper stock-and-voice taste (Fliki), or a public YouTube talking-head you will still shoot. A nicer avatar will not invent a channel. Mixing those up is how enablement software ends up on a social calendar.
When Creator or Enterprise is the real question
Creator is how Synthesia sells the working self-serve desk. About 30 minutes a month (360/year), 180+ avatars, more personal avatars, API, interactive extras. $89 monthly or about $64 billed annually. You are buying a calendar under a real cap, not a prettier Starter. Buy it when one editor plus guests will ship modules and 30 minutes is a constraint you can live with. Skip it if you have not survived Starter's face on an internal channel. Skip it if legal wants SSO — that is Enterprise wearing a Creator-shaped hope.
Enterprise is how Synthesia sells the company. Unlimited minutes on the page we saw, 240+ stock avatars, unlimited personal avatars (fair use), SAML/SSO, SCORM, one-click translation, live collaboration, brand kits, a dedicated conversation. You request a quote. The term is usually a year. Buy it when L&D already has a localization problem and security is in the room. Do not buy it because Starter felt lonely. Mid-market teams often sign Enterprise and then discover they needed three scripts and a brand kit, not a CSM.
What 'worth it' is not
- A completion-rate lab. We did not run 400-module bake-offs or invent a review count.
- A coupon hunt. If there is a live trial deal it lives on /deals. We do not invent codes or partner URLs.
- A reason to upgrade for stock avatars. 125+ sit on Starter. Upgrade when minutes, API, or governance is the wall.
- Cheaper than a studio if you needed a brand film. It is cheaper than another quarterly shoot you did not need to book.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either someone generated a module the LMS or the all-hands actually used, or they did not. If the workspace is a graveyard of three wooden scripts and a stock presenter nobody blessed, it was not worth it. If a few scripts replaced a shoot and viewers just consume the update, it was. That is the whole audit. Synthesia pricing tells you which plan that habit belongs on.
Synthesia is worth it when the expensive part is the studio you did not book. It is not worth it when one person wanted a blog recut, a personalized outbound clip, or a film with an avatar badge. Mixing those up is how you pay per minute and generate wood nobody assigns.— Aiacent, 2026
Verdict
Worth it: scripts you already write, a presenter that has to sit on them — Creator, annual if the face already survived Starter. Still proving the avatar: Basic or Starter monthly, then leave if the uncanny valley won. Locales, SSO, SCORM, unlimited minutes: take the Enterprise conversation. A blog you recut for social: do not buy Synthesia — Pictory is the seat, and Pictory vs Synthesia says so. Trying not to buy the studio at all: Synthesia alternatives. Then read Synthesia pricing if the fight is the plan picker, and the video ranking if you want the score next to HeyGen and Fliki.
