- If you already pay for Zoom Workplace Pro or higher, the companion question is usually 'turn it on,' not 'buy a new product.' Zoom's own 2026 posts: meeting summaries, chat compose, transcription, call summaries stay included on eligible paid plans.
- Basic is not this product. Zoom's Pro vs Basic table prints AI Companion as included on Pro and not included on Basic. Buying a notetaker because Basic felt empty is a different ticket from buying Pro for meetings.
- The only monthly Workplace numeral Zoom printed on the Pro page we fetched is $15.99 billed monthly. We will not invent a $13.33 annual from a third-party reprint. Confirm the annual toggle on zoom.us/pricing.
- ZoomMate at $20 is agentic deliverables and credit-metered actions. Zoom is explicit you can keep using included AI without it. Buying ZoomMate so a recap felt lonely is how this search wastes a quarter.
- Zoom says it does not train on customer meeting content. Admins still have to enable the features. A companion nobody turned on is not 'included.'

Zoom AI Companion is worth it when the expensive part is a recap in a room you already host
The teams who should use it already pay for Zoom. The habit is a summary in the thread, a transcript a late joiner can ask about, a chat draft in the product they will not leave. Worth it means $0 incremental on a Pro or Business seat you were buying for 30-hour meetings anyway. That is a real save versus a second bot. It is not a trophy versus Otter. If you cannot point at the Zoom invoice you already have, you are shopping for a notetaker. Otter exists so you can search last month. Fireflies exists so the CRM gets the note. Fireflies wins last quarter in the CRM — Pro $10 a seat billed annually, Fireflies pricing. If those sentences describe the leak, the companion is not worth treating as the product. Keep Zoom for the meeting. Buy the archive.
The same no applies to ZoomMate. $20 a user and 2,200 credits is a teammate that files docs and runs workflows. Buy it when that job is named and the companion already recaps. Do not buy it because a 2026 blog renamed Companion to ZoomMate and you panicked. Zoom's own post: included AI stays; ZoomMate is optional.
When Pro, Business, or ZoomMate is the real question
Pro is the individual / small-team Workplace seat. AI Companion included. $15.99 billed monthly on the page we checked. Buy Pro for meetings that have to last longer than 40 minutes. The companion is a bonus on that invoice, not the reason to climb from Basic if you host one stand-up.
Business and Enterprise are admin, SSO, larger rooms. Core AI stays included on eligible paid plans. Buy the edition for the meeting controls. Do not buy Business so summaries felt more official.
ZoomMate is the credit conversation. $20, 2,200 credits, agentic retrieval, unlimited AI note-taking across Zoom and third-party meetings on the product page we checked. Buy it when someone will spend those credits on work you can name. Skip it if the leak was the recap. That recap is already in Workplace.
What 'worth it' is not
- A transcription bake-off. We did not score word error or invent a review count.
- A 2024 'AI Companion add-on $10' rumor. In 2026 Zoom sells the companion as included on eligible paid Workplace, and ZoomMate as the add-on.
- A coupon hunt. No invented Impact URLs.
- A reason to skip Otter or Fireflies when the archive is the job.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either someone opened a Zoom summary they reused, or the companion is an unread email. If you added Otter anyway and nobody searches either archive, the leak was the meeting, not the notes. If ZoomMate credits sat untouched, it was not worth the $20. That is the whole audit. Is Otter worth it if the other desk was captions. Fireflies pricing if the CRM was the job.

Worth it: you already pay for Zoom Workplace — turn the companion on; leave ZoomMate off until a deliverable is named. Still on Basic: pay for Pro if the meeting is the job, not the AI slide. Not worth it as the product: a searchable archive (is Otter worth it — Otter pricing), CRM search (Fireflies pricing), coaching from the tape (Gong), an edit-by-text habit (Descript). Then read the transcription ranking if you want the scores, and Fireflies vs Otter if both archives are already in the deck.
