Later vs Buffer (2026): which social calendar wins which job?
Buffer wins a multi-channel queue you will open. Later wins the visual grid — Starter is $18.75 a month billed yearly on the card we fetched. They are not interchangeable, and Hootsuite is a third job.

Later
7.9/10Best visual social calendar
The visual social calendar — Instagram and TikTok first, Buffer's queue second.
Later is the scheduler we would hand a brand that thinks in tiles. You drag a still onto a calendar that looks like the Instagram grid. You see the week. That is the product. Caption drafts help. They will not invent a content program, and they are not a reason to churn Buffer if the leak was 'nothing is queued.'
- Best for
- Visual brands that plan the grid and the Reel before they write a caption.
- Skip if
- You needed a simple multi-channel queue (Buffer) or an enterprise listening suite (Hootsuite).
Why it ranks
- The visual planner is still the reason people stay — you see the grid before you post
- Instagram, TikTok, and Linkin.bio match how visual brands actually ship
- Caption assist is fine. It is not why you would leave Buffer
Watch-outs
- Not a listening or approvals platform. That is Hootsuite or Sprout
- Not the cheapest calendar if LinkedIn and a blog are the whole program
- AI captions still read like AI captions if you do not edit

Buffer
8.2/10Best AI-assisted scheduler
The social calendar that added AI captions — still a scheduler first.
Buffer is a scheduler that added AI. That sentence is the review. Most 'best AI social media tools' lists bury the calendar under twenty creative apps. The leak for a lot of teams is still: nothing is queued, and Thursday at 4pm is a scramble.
- Best for
- Small and mid-market teams that need a calendar they will actually open, plus AI drafts.
- Skip if
- The leak is creative or video, not the queue — or you already pay for Sprout / Hootsuite and the calendar is fine.
Why it ranks
- A calendar people still open on a Tuesday
- AI assistant for ideas and captions is useful and not the reason to switch
- Honest pricing compared with enterprise suites you will not staff
Watch-outs
- Not a creative studio — generated images are a side feature
- Not a listening or employee-advocacy platform
- AI captions still read like AI captions if you do not edit

Both products will put a post on a calendar. That is where the overlap ends, and it is why 'Later vs Buffer' is a bad 2026 question if you have not named the leak. A queue across a few channels, and a week that has to look like the Instagram grid before you publish, are different seats. Mixing them up is how you buy Later Growth because Buffer felt plain — or stay on Buffer until the grid is a screenshot in Figma.
This page is the two-way, winner by job. Buffer pricing is the per-channel cart, checked 19 September 2026. Is Buffer worth it is that subscription. Later's yearly cards below were fetched from later.com/pricing on 22 September 2026. Is Later worth it is the Later purchase. The social ranking is the scored table (Buffer 8.2 as the scheduler, Later 7.9 as the visual calendar). Hootsuite is the enterprise suite. Predis is the tile you did not design. We will not invent a partner URL.
The public bills, in one place
Buffer, from buffer.com/pricing on 19 September 2026: Free is $0 with ten scheduled posts per channel. Essentials is $5 per channel per month billed annually (typically $6 month-to-month). Team is $10 per channel billed annually (typically $12). You pay per channel, not per seat, on those rows. Confirm the live cart — we did not re-fetch Buffer on the 22nd.
Later, from later.com/pricing on 22 September 2026, yearly toggle: Starter $18.75 USD/month billed yearly (1 social set, 8 profiles, 1 user, up to 30 posts per profile, 5 AI credits a month, 3 months of analytics). Growth $37.50 USD/month billed yearly (2 social sets, 2 users, approvals, inbox, up to 180 posts per profile, 50 AI credits, a year of analytics). Scale $82.50 USD/month billed yearly (unlimited posts, 100 AI credits, competitive benchmarking, two years of analytics). The page led with a 14-day trial and '3 months free | 25% off' on the yearly cards. It did not print a permanent $0 plan. Extra users are $5 each on paid plans; Starter is limited to one user. Monthly numerals did not render as a second static card — confirm that toggle. We will not invent $25 / $50 / $110.
| If this is the social job | Buy | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| A queue across a few channels you will actually open | Buffer — Free to learn, Essentials when ten posts is a joke | Later as a prettier Buffer |
| You plan the Instagram and TikTok grid before you write the caption | Later — Starter if one brand and one person; Growth if a second set or approvals | Buffer as a visual planner |
| Approvals, listening, and a social org with a manager | Neither as the first pick — Hootsuite. Is Hootsuite worth it. | Later Scale as a cheaper Hootsuite |
| The leak is the creative file, not the calendar | Neither — Predis or Canva | Either scheduler as a design tool |
| LinkedIn text is the whole program and nobody looks at a grid | Buffer | Later because a thread said visual-first |
| You have not queued a week in the tool you already have | Neither paid seat | A second calendar logo |
Buy Buffer if the expensive part is an empty queue
Buffer earns the default seat when the leak is 'nothing is scheduled' across more than one network, and a person will open the calendar. AI captions are a junior intern on that desk. They are not why you would leave. Essentials at $5 a channel billed annually is the honest small-team row on the ladder we cite. Team at $10 is approvals and a shared calendar — still not listening. Is Buffer worth it is the subscription. Buffer alternatives is the leave-Buffer guide, and Later is the visual row on it.
- Best for: operators who need a queue they will open
- Skip if: the complaint is the grid, the tile, or enterprise listening
- Honest watch-out: per channel, three networks on Essentials is $15 a month yearly — still often less than Later Growth, and a different job
Buy Later if you will look at the grid
Later earns the visual seat when someone drags a still onto a week that has to look like the profile. Starter at $18.75 a month billed yearly is one social set and one user — casual scheduling, Link in Bio, a short analytics window. Growth at $37.50 is the first real team row: a second set, a second user, approvals, an inbox, more posts. Scale at $82.50 is benchmarking and unlimited posts, not a listening suite. Caption assist is still an intern. If you will not look at the grid, you bought a more expensive Buffer.
Skip Later if LinkedIn text is the job. Skip it if you already pay Hootsuite and the calendar is fine — Standard is $99 a user a month billed annually on the Hootsuite FAQ we cite, which is a different product from Scale. Skip it if the file does not exist yet. Predis vs Buffer is the tile fight. Is Later worth it is the subscription.
The 30-day tell
After a month, either the grid was planned in Later before the caption existed, or it was not. If Later sat as a Buffer you resented, it was the wrong seat. If Buffer's list view kept hiding a broken week of tiles, Later was the point. The social ranking has the scores. The Instagram and TikTok rankings are the channel versions if the leak was the network, not the calendar.
Later wins the grid. Buffer wins the queue. Hootsuite wins the suite. Mixing those up is how you pay Growth and still approve posts in a spreadsheet.— Aiacent, 2026
Verdict
Buffer if you will schedule and the grid is not the product. Later Starter if one visual brand is the product. Later Growth if a second set or approvals are named. Hootsuite if listening is named. Predis or Canva if the file is the leak. Then read is Later worth it if the fight is the Later bill, and is Buffer worth it if the fight is the per-channel bill.
