Runway pricing (2026): Standard vs Pro vs Max — and what the credits actually buy

Standard is $15 a month or $12 billed annually. Pro is the working gen seat. Max is the daily credit religion. The expensive mistake is paying for a camera when you needed Pictory.

Runway

8.2/10

Best cinematic video generator

Cinematic generation and a timeline — a camera, not a blog-to-video intern.

Runway is the video tool we would hand a creative team that needs a shot. Text or image to motion. A pass on footage you already have. A timeline that is closer to an editor than a storyboard of stock. That is a camera. It is not a blog recut, and it is not an avatar.

Best for
Creative teams that need a directed shot or a gen pass on footage, not a presenter or a recut blog.
Skip if
You needed avatar training, a personalized outbound clip, or 'make this article a Reel.'

Why it ranks

  • The look is still the reason people pay — motion that can hold a campaign still
  • Gen plus a real timeline: inpaint, restyle, Act-One-class performance, not just a prompt box
  • The product other 'AI video' tools get compared to when the job is a shot

Watch-outs

  • Credits disappear. A weekend of iterates is a different bill than the landing page
  • Not Synthesia, not HeyGen, not Pictory. A camera will not train a room or say the account's name
  • Easy to treat a pretty gen as a finished ad. Legal, product accuracy, and a human cut still exist

Product look

Runway

Figure slot. No vendor screenshot until we have a rights-cleared file.

Runway product look — screenshot slot reserved. Add a rights-cleared capture at public/figures/runway.png. We do not hotlink vendor UIs.

People search 'Runway pricing' because they want a number, or because finance asked why a weekend of iterates costs more than a Pictory seat. Those are different tickets. If you do not name whether you needed a directed shot, cheaper social gen, or a blog recut, you will buy Pro because the homepage looked like a film — or stay on Free until the one-time 125 credits are gone and you still do not have a content program.

This is a cost page, not a lab. Public list prices below were checked against runwayml.com/pricing (also runway.com/pricing) on 19 September 2026. They change. We do not invent a Team sticker, a Gen-4.5 quality bake-off, or a partner URL. The full review is /tools/runway. Runway alternatives is the leave-the-camera guide. The video ranking is the operator table. A sane AI video stack is the ladder.

Runway cost in 2026, at a glance

PlanPublic priceCreditsWhat you are actually buying
Free$0125 one-time (do not expire)A taste of the camera. Not a rollout.
Standard$15/mo, or $12/mo billed annually625 / month (7,500 / year on annual)Curious creators. About 52s of Gen-4.5 on their own math.
Pro$35/mo, or $28/mo billed annually2,250 / month (27,000 / year on annual)The working gen seat — all models, 4K upscale on the help grid
Max$95/mo, or $76/mo billed annually9,500 / month (114,000 / year on annual)Daily generation. One month of unused credits can roll.
Public list prices from runwayml.com/pricing, checked 19 September 2026. Annual is the number they lead with. Credits are the meter. Gen-4.5 is listed at 12 credits per second (60 credits / 5s) on that page.
  • Standard and Pro monthly credits expire around the billing date. They do not roll. Max can roll up to one unused month. Purchased top-up credits (1,000 minimum) do not expire — Runway's own help center.
  • Unlimited is a legacy plan being moved to Max (Runway's help pages; remaining Unlimited access was extended through 30 November 2026 for eligible subs). New buyers should price Max, not a 2024 Unlimited blog.
  • Team and Enterprise exist for shared benches. We will not invent a Team per-seat sticker the consumer pricing page did not publish. Confirm in checkout or sales.
  • A weekend of discarded iterates is a different bill than the landing-page numeral. Count finished shots, not 'unlimited AI video.'

Stay on Free or Standard if you are proving the camera, not a campaign

Free is a real taste: 125 credits that do not expire. Enough to learn whether the look is even the job. Standard is the first paid rung — 625 credits a month, $15 or $12 annual. Runway's own page positions it for curious creators. You will burn it on iterates. That is either obvious or a fight the first Sunday.

Pay monthly if you are still proving someone will sit with the meter. Pay annually if the art desk already lives here. Skip Standard if the input is a URL (Pictory), a training script (Synthesia), a prospect's name (HeyGen), or tape you already shot (Descript). Runway alternatives names those forks. Skip it if the leak was 'cheaper social gen' — that is often Pika, not a smaller Runway basket.

  • Best for: one designer or editor testing whether directed motion is even a channel
  • Skip if: you needed a recut, a presenter, a personalized clip, or an editor for tape
  • Honest watch-out: 625 credits will not become a campaign if you just buy more months

Buy Pro when a few directed shots a week is the job

Pro is the honest self-serve camera. 2,250 credits a month — about 187 seconds of Gen-4.5 on Runway's example — $35 monthly or $28 annual. Help-center plan chooser: Pro and higher unlock every model and 4K upscale. This is the plan most 'we will gen a hero this week' tickets should price — not Standard, and not Max as a vibe.

Buy it when a creative team can brief a look and will recut. Skip it if you have not survived Free's first ugly gen. Skip it if you generate every day and Standard/Pro credits dying at month-end is the fight — that meeting is Max. Skip it if nobody will watch the meter. A cinematic generator will not invent a content program.

  • Best for: brand and campaign teams who will finish the cut and can name the shot
  • Skip if: the input is a blog, a script with a face, or footage you already have
  • Honest watch-out: more credits will not invent a brief. Pretty gens still need legal, product accuracy, and a human cut

Buy Max when the meter, not the logo, is the weekly leak

Max is $95 a month or $76 billed annually. 9,500 credits. One month of unused credits can roll. On-demand speed, full model access. Runway's own Max article positions it for high-volume or deadline-driven work. That is a daily-generation bill. If you are asking whether Pro is enough, you are not a Max buyer yet. Prove the Pro wall first.

Team is the shared-workspace conversation when several people generate every day. Enterprise is the ten-plus org. We will not guess those stickers. Do not let a deck turn a $28 habit into a studio line item because someone said 'unlimited.' Unlimited is the legacy plan. Max is the current high-volume row.

Runway vs Pika vs Pictory, as a bill

Pika is the cheaper social-gen row on Runway alternatives. Buy Pika when the clip is short and the credit religion was the fight. Buy Kling when the motion has to hold and you will still finish in an editor. Stay on Runway when the timeline and the look are the habit. There is no honest 'Pika is 40% of Runway' math — they are different cameras.

Pictory Professional annual is about $35 and buys export minutes for a recut. Synthesia Starter annual is about $18 and buys about ten presenter minutes. Runway Pro annual is $28 and buys credits for a shot. Mixing those bills is how enablement software ends up on a moodboard, or a film camera ends up on a blog calendar. Pictory pricing and Synthesia pricing are the operator versions. The video stack is the ladder.

What we are not pricing

  • Team or Enterprise per-seat quotes. The consumer page we checked did not publish them.
  • A Gen-4.5 vs Kling quality lab or an invented review count.
  • Top-up credit packs as a 'typical' extra. Minimum purchase is 1,000 credits. Read the cart.
  • A fake Impact or PartnerStack URL. Until a real partner link is set, the CTA goes to runwayml.com.
Most 'what does Runway cost' tickets are a Pro ticket, a Max ticket, or a Pictory ticket. The pricing page is doing too much work if you have not named the shot.Aiacent pricing, 2026

Verdict

Curious, proving the look: Free, then Standard monthly. A few directed shots a week, someone will finish the cut: Pro, annual if the habit is already real. Daily generation and credits dying at month-end: Max. A blog you recut for social: do not buy Runway — Pictory is the seat. A presenter on a script: Synthesia. Cheaper social iterates: Pika, then Runway alternatives. Then read the video ranking if you want the operator scores, and the video stack if you are trying not to buy four video logos in one quarter.
