Klaviyo vs Mailchimp (2026): winner by job, not a cheaper-email trophy

Klaviyo wins owned ecommerce flows — abandoned checkout, SMS, a customer graph. Mailchimp wins a newsletter and a handful of automations you already understand. They are not interchangeable, and the $20 versus Standard sticker is usually the wrong reason to choose.

Klaviyo

8.9/10

Best ecommerce CRM

Email and SMS for ecommerce, now with a serious AI layer.

Klaviyo is not 'an AI tool.' It is the ecommerce CRM that added AI in the places that matter: segments, subject lines, product recommendations, and (carefully) content. That is why it leads our ecommerce ranking, the 2026 marketing stack, and the AI email ranking. The brands making money on owned channels already live here; the AI features are leverage, not the reason the category exists.

Best for
Shopify-class brands that make money from owned channels.

You send a monthly newsletter from Mailchimp and that is the whole program.

Why it ranks

  • Still the default marketing OS for serious ecommerce
  • AI helps with segments, content, and predictions — on top of a real platform
  • SMS, email, and reviews in one customer graph

Watch-outs

  • Bills grow with your success, which feels like a tax
  • You can over-message if you turn every AI suggestion on
  • B2B / non-commerce CRM use is a stretch

Mailchimp

7.8/10

Best simple email AI

The newsletter tool people already have — now with Mailchimp AI on top.

Mailchimp is the email tool most 'we need AI email' tickets already own. Intuit's Mailchimp AI will draft a campaign, rewrite a subject line, and suggest a segment. That is leverage on a simple program. It is not a reason to skip Klaviyo if abandoned checkout and SMS are how you print money.

Creators and small brands whose program is a newsletter, a few automations, and a list they already keep here.

Owned channels are how you make money and you need ecommerce-grade flows — that is still Klaviyo.

Why it ranks

  • The default inbox for teams that are not ready for a marketing OS
  • Mailchimp AI is useful for subject lines, content variants, and a first draft — on a list you already have
  • Templates and a brand kit beat a blank Klaviyo canvas for a monthly send

Watch-outs

  • Predictive segments and Shopify-class flows still trail Klaviyo
  • Bills and product complexity jump once you outgrow the newsletter job
  • B2B CRM and multi-channel lifecycle are a stretch — that is HubSpot

Both products will send an email. That is where the overlap ends, and it is why 'Klaviyo vs Mailchimp' is a bad 2026 question if you have not named the job. Printing money from abandoned checkout and SMS, and sending a newsletter you already understand, are different seats. Mixing them up is how you stay on Mailchimp at 8,000 Shopify profiles and wonder why the welcome series still looks like a blast — or migrate to Klaviyo because Assist felt 'not ecommerce' and then pause Free at profile 251.

This page is the two-way. Klaviyo pricing is the profile-and-SMS bill. Is Klaviyo worth it is the subscription. Is Mailchimp AI worth it is the Assist question. HubSpot vs Klaviyo is the B2B two-way. The email ranking is the scored send. The ecommerce ranking is the store desk. The email-marketer stack is the order of operations. Read this one if both send logos are already in the deck.

The public bills, in one place

Klaviyo Free is $0 with 250 active profiles, 500 emails a month, $5 of mobile messages, and $5 of Composer. Paid email is a usage slider on active profiles — a commonly published first paid band is about $20 a month around 251–500 profiles; a 5,000-profile shop often lands near $100 email-only on recaps of the same calculator. SMS is a second monthly dollar pack. Klaviyo bills monthly. That is klaviyo.com/pricing plus the shape we already cite on Klaviyo pricing, re-checked 20 September 2026. Confirm the live band. We will not paste a 20-row ladder the slider will outdate.

Mailchimp Free is under 250 contacts on the official comparison table, with a Free send cap on that grid. Generative AI / Intuit Assist is a no-additional-cost add-on on Standard and Premium for certain users, and is not included on Free or Essentials. 14-day trial of Standard or Essentials. The contact-tier calculator did not render as a static Standard-from-$20 card in the fetch we opened. Confirm mailchimp.com/pricing/marketing. That is the same honesty as is Mailchimp AI worth it, checked 20 September 2026.

Buy Klaviyo if the expensive part is the owned flow

Klaviyo earns the 2026 email seat when the money is in the flow: abandoned checkout, a browse series, SMS that is not a blast, a customer graph Shopify already feeds. Free is a real taste — 250 profiles, 500 sends. The first paid band commonly lands near $20. That is why we score Klaviyo 8.9 as the ecommerce CRM — and why this comparison will not pretend that score was a Mailchimp bake-off. Is Klaviyo worth it is the subscription. Klaviyo pricing is the slider. The ecommerce ranking is the store desk.

Skip Klaviyo if the program is still a monthly newsletter and the catalog events do not fire. Skip it if you are B2B SaaS looking for the opportunity — HubSpot. Skip it if you will not suppress. A dirty list is a price increase. Skip it because Assist felt 'not predictive.' Predictive segments on a graph you do not have are folklore.

  • Best for: Shopify-class brands whose owned channels are the P&L
  • Skip if: the leak is a newsletter, a B2B pipeline, or the draft
  • Honest watch-out: $20 vs Standard without naming the graph is how this page exists

Buy Mailchimp if the expensive part is a send you already understand

Mailchimp earns the seat when the program is a newsletter, a few automations, and a list someone already opens on Tuesdays. Free is under 250 contacts. Standard is the first AI-inclusive climb on the official table — Assist rides along at no extra AI line if you qualify. That is why we score Mailchimp 7.8 as the simple email AI. Is Mailchimp AI worth it is the Assist question. Climb for automations and branding-off, not for a chatbot badge.

Skip Mailchimp if abandoned checkout is how you print money. Skip it if the send has to know the deal stage. Skip it if you will still rebuild Klaviyo flows in Q3 — then you wanted the graph, and Standard is a costume.

  • Best for: creators and small brands whose program is still a send calendar
  • Skip if: the leak is the Shopify graph, or Free's 250 has not been a wall
  • Honest watch-out: Assist will not invent a catalog

What this comparison is not

  • A deliverability or open-rate lab. We did not run 400-send bake-offs or invent a review count.
  • A HubSpot trophy. HubSpot vs Klaviyo already shipped. Is HubSpot worth it is the hub subscription.
  • A reason to migrate a living list this week because a thread said Klaviyo won 2026.
  • A writing-model fight. The email-marketer stack still starts with the issue you will rewrite.
Most 'Klaviyo vs Mailchimp' tickets are a flow ticket or a newsletter ticket. The word email is doing too much work.Aiacent, 2026

Verdict

Klaviyo when the expensive part is an owned flow — Free first, paid email when profile 251 is the wall (is Klaviyo worth it — Klaviyo pricing). Mailchimp when the expensive part is a send you already understand — Free first, Standard when automations are the wall (is Mailchimp AI worth it). Neither when the leak is HubSpot's pipeline or a ChatGPT draft. Then read the email-marketer stack if you are trying not to buy five ESPs, the email ranking if you want the scores, and the ecommerce ranking if the leftover job is the store.
